I hadn't used #novelWriter for awhile. I opened it recently and it updated.
A new feature (hovering preview window) led me to encounter a navigation pain point that I don't have using #Obsidian. Now I'm testing the waters of importing my project into Obsidian.
I'm not 100% committed to the switch, but I really want better file navigation than novelWriter offers. Obsidian has a Back button, file tabs, and side-by-side functional EDIT windows.
If they were more compatible I'd use both.

@veronica — Going through FR translations for #NovelWriter, I have a question about the "Add titles for note root folders" build option. What does it do exactly, i.e., what effects does setting this option have vs unsetting it?

I'm at home typing away in #novelWriter . It's excellent for me. I keep my notes and stuff in #obsidian, and create covers for my books in #GIMP.
Anything 'plotting' happens in a LibreCalc spreadsheet.

With RC1 of novelWriter 2026.2 out, I've updated my extremely nerdy NovelWriterExtract tool to version 1.5.0, which supports both the existing project file format and the new one supported by 2026.2.

It's bizarre how I can start 2 instances of novelwriter on Linux in half the time it takes to start 1 on Windows.

Working on Chromebook plus. I used the Appimage. There were a couple of workarounds.1) it doesn't work with ChromeOS Wayland, so I have to run as "QT_QPA_PLATFORM=xcb NovelWriter.AppImage"
I symlink the current version to NovelWriter.AppImage so that I can upgrade and downgrade easily.
2) I had to "apt install enchant-2" to get the spellcheck to work.After that I created a .desktop file so that it appears in the ChromeOS App menu.
Chromebooks are cheap, light, and portable, and have a long battery life. You need one with the "Chromebook plus" specification to run Linux apps.

I was thinking of trying Bibisco but I've realised that the free @novelwriter has one serious advantage that will make me stick with it. It supports smart quotes while you type! Yes, Bibisco, you can export as a document, load into a word processor and change the quotes from " to “ and ” but that's so fiddly and so much chance of an error.

I use #novelWriter for my fiction writing, so I'm not planning on migrating that. I quite like Novelwriter (stylized novelWriter).
My technical notes are markdown files that I manage with a regular text editor (#xed and #micro).
I use #LibreOffice for print-outs for my #PathfinderRPG game. It lets me do page layout. For that stuff I try to squeeze much data on one page, and occasionally print player-facing documents as well.
I may not have an Obsidian use-case.

Nice to know.
For auto-replace sequences in Novelwriter that have a quote in them, it's necessary to escape (add a \) in front of them to show the quote.I love this software.

Still stunned that Novelwriter starts in 3 seconds on my Linux box and in 15 on the windows work machine.
