  1. #WritersCoffeeClub 9/3 If you work digitally, what application do you use? If analog, what do you write on?

I'm at home typing away in #novelWriter . It's excellent for me. I keep my notes and stuff in #obsidian, and create covers for my books in #GIMP.

Anything 'plotting' happens in a LibreCalc spreadsheet.

  2. Made a NovelWriter tips and tricks post. Just a few thoughts as I learn how to navigate the app.

  3. With RC1 of novelWriter 2026.2 out, I've updated my extremely nerdy NovelWriterExtract tool to version 1.5.0, which supports both the existing project file format and the new one supported by 2026.2.

  4. It's bizarre how I can start 2 instances of novelwriter on Linux in half the time it takes to start 1 on Windows.

  5. @novelwriter
Working on Chromebook plus. I used the Appimage. There were a couple of workarounds.

    1) it doesn't work with ChromeOS Wayland, so I have to run as "QT_QPA_PLATFORM=xcb NovelWriter.AppImage"
I symlink the current version to NovelWriter.AppImage so that I can upgrade and downgrade easily.
    2) I had to "apt install enchant-2" to get the spellcheck to work.

After that I created a .desktop file so that it appears in the ChromeOS App menu.

Chromebooks are cheap, light, and portable, and have a long battery life. You need one with the "Chromebook plus" specification to run Linux apps.

  6. I open novelWriter so often that I click that icon even when I want to open another program.

    Just happened again.
    True story.

  7. I was thinking of trying Bibisco but I've realised that the free @novelwriter has one serious advantage that will make me stick with it. It supports smart quotes while you type! Yes, Bibisco, you can export as a document, load into a word processor and change the quotes from " to “ and ” but that's so fiddly and so much chance of an error.

  8. @_DigitalWriter_

I use #novelWriter for my fiction writing, so I'm not planning on migrating that. I quite like Novelwriter (stylized novelWriter).

My technical notes are markdown files that I manage with a regular text editor (#xed and #micro).

I use #LibreOffice for print-outs for my #PathfinderRPG game. It lets me do page layout. For that stuff I try to squeeze much data on one page, and occasionally print player-facing documents as well.

I may not have an Obsidian use-case.

  9. #WordWeavers 7 What writing or publishing resource do you think everyone should know about?

I find that the project notes system in #NovelWriter is lightweight enough to be useful when I'm actually writing, both for adding notes about things like character names as I create them and for looking things up on the fly.

I prefer Sigil to Calibre for tweaking epubs, but my user interface preferences are ... odd.

  10. Nice to know.
For auto-replace sequences in Novelwriter that have a quote in them, it's necessary to escape (add a \) in front of them to show the quote.

    I love this software.

  11. Still stunned that Novelwriter starts in 3 seconds on my Linux box and in 15 on the windows work machine.

  13. If I start a #NovelWriter project for Egypt 3 I will have 10 WIPs... And 2 projects in edit and 2 waiting for edit.

Do you work on more than 1 too?

  17. Constantly entertained/surprised that the Linux version of #Novelwriter is all up and running (2 seconds) by the time the Windows version has started to display the splash screen and is still deciding if loading the basic font is a good idea.

    #novelwriter #vscode

    すでにissueが登録されているので、修正されることを期待しています。
    issueのコメントには「中国語版でも問題が出る」と書かれています。変換を伴うインプットメソッドを使う環境が増えているのは心強いですね。
    英語もIME使うようになるといいのに。

  19. #WritersCoffeeClub 19. How do you keep track of dates and events in a WIP?

Until I was about 50K words into vol 3, I just kept it in my head. Then I kept needing to refer to the end of vol 2 so as not to contradict some tight relative timing between the plot threads. So I pulled a sparse outline out into Timeline notes in #novelwriter For most of the first two volumes, references to seasons and calendar points like holidays had been sufficient.

  20. 1800 words today, in 2 projects.
    It feels good.

    #Novelwriter makes this so easy.

  21. @elysegrasso

What is the advantage of #NovelWriter. I looked at their site, and it looked like more work.

Fedi is the only place I publish that supports markdown. And even then, it's not universal.

Obviously, you are seeing something I'm not. So I am asking.

  25. In my profile I say I wrote a first draft manuscript but I keep procrastinating edits and further drafts. I'm trying to at least get the draft typed and in one cohesive project file, so, to that end, I'm assigning Tuesdays as Typing/Transcription Tuesdays.

Today I moved some text from Scrivener Trial Version to #NovelWriter, including recreating document tags. I want to get everything out of Scrivener, then work on getting the stuff that didn't even make it into Scrivener yet.

    #WIP

  26. @aki It's a great tool. I've used it for the opposite: to take a Word doc exported by Scrivener to convert to Markdown, then imported into novelWriter. It took a little custom code to handle quirks in novelWriter's dialect of Markdown, but other than that it made it much easier to leave Scrivener behind.
