Throw-away pop ditty or electronic music pioneer? I say, why not both?
This tune had several iterations. Originally released on Gershon Kingsley’s album "Music to Moog By" in 1969, you know just by that title and date that this was more than the simple novelty song, the pop ‘corn’ intentionally implied by its name. Kingsley released a rearranged version in 1972 with his First Moog Quartet, and then Stan Free, a member of the quartet, released a version with his band Hot Butter the same year; this was the version that became a European and stateside hit.
