A couple of days of great catchup. When the clock turns over to midnight, I have 3 days left to write just over 6K words, which is, I'll be honest, a little steep, but absolutely doable. It means at least 2K a day, and I managed to write 3K today, though this was a travel day, so I had time to kill waiting around.

I'm not patting myself on the back yet, but I might actually get to finish this thing!

This stats panel from my almost-finished draft that was already A Lot Of Work Actually is a bit of a reality check. A full month of near-daily pushing this thing up a hill results in a very, very slim paperback.

Shadowed Memories concentrated on a big horror author, Klive Emmons. While a mysterious doctor pulled up memories that had been long forgotten, or hidden away, his grip on reality was shaken. Horrors that he believed to only exist in nightmares began to haunt him, while the path to freeing himself from the pursuing invaders of his life seemed out of reach. In the end he finds an inner strength he didn’t know was there and manages to overcome the ordeal with some help, although his survival is not without tragedy.

Eeeeeep! Another surprisingly hectic day.

In September I published Shadowed Memories Part 2, finishing the psychological horror tale that I started with Part 1 in 2019. I’m now working on a sequel that takes place about a year later that I’m currently calling Shadowed Memories: Dark Shadow. The dust has settled and our lead characters are still dealing with the aftermath in the form of mental scars. At the same time there’s a new spiritual movement that has seen growth globally, claiming to grant blessings of luck and protection to its adherents. Something sinister lurks just beneath the surface of their faith.

What I'm working on is a Sci-Fantasy Western / MM Romantica (slipstream) novel started for NaNoWriMo in 2018 (not completed), expanded in June 2022 (still incomplete), revised with a filling out of story notes in the following years, then coming into this month with a draft manuscript ~41500 words.

I'm approaching a total word count of 52k words today. That's the current draft sans cut scenes and rewrites.

Slow. But... progressing.

I'm now less than a day behind, and I surprised myself by finding a whole other beat in the story. I am starting to get a little anxious that the end of the story and the moment I hit my wordcount are going to miles and miles apart, either I'm nowhere near finished the story when I hit 50K words, or I wrap this baby up at 40K. I am more scared of the first one, since that's how it seems to be going, and that's a harder circle to square. However as @[email protected] pointed out, sometimes you read a real actual published book (e.g. The Secret Commonwealth) and that's kinda what it feels like happened.

But sure look, it's just a bit of fun.

Forgot to post this yesterday – had a fun-filled day with rare opportunities to socialise, so didn't hit my daily target, but these things happen. I'm hitting an interesting part of the story.

The streets vibrate with life. Quiet is but a faded dream while walking around in the big city. Thoughts are hard to hold onto when engines growl around every corner, crawling over the shuffling of people along the crowded sidewalks. Skyscrapers pierce the horizon, yet the sun skips its rays across steel and glass, causing some surfaces to sparkle while others become bright and eye blistering. There’s an intermingling of scents, both pleasant and foul, that threaten to further scramble the senses of those with heightened olfactory receptors. It’s here where something that doesn’t belong lurks, walking the streets donning a pair of shades, blocking out the noise with music humming in through oversized headphones. Following the flow of moving bodies, while trying to keep his composure, is the fiend hunter trapped in another world.

Me finishing this #WritingMonth is by no means a sure thing, especially as I have a week of business travel at the end of the month which could easily knock me off my game, but this is the best crack at it I've ever managed.

I'm wondering if I should sit down and read what I've written in one sitting at some point before I finish. Have any of ye grafters that've managed to finish this process tried that while ye were writing it? or only when ye finished?

I will say that I have changed my mind about some minor details and holding myself back from revising is making me twitch a bit, but I have limited bandwidth and am struggling to keep up with a positive burndown as it is, so not gonna fall farther behind rewriting what I've written.

I'm doing #WritingMonth (aka #NaNoWriMo (#FuckAI) aka #NovelNovember) atm and something that keeps coming back to me was the posthumous biography about #TerryPratchett written by his assistant Rob, who said something like "somehow, against all odds, the writing got done, despite the immense amount of 'mucking about' we did".

I am a divil for #procrastiwork, and I've actually been letting myself enjoy it. Just jumped into my cloud backup setup for my VPS and cleaned it up, removing all the caches and logs, deleting backups for services I'm not using anymore, backing up stuff I've recently spun up (like this #GoToSocial service). I had been putting that shit off for months, but put a deadline in front of me and suddenly it's the most important thing in the world. But then when it was done, I sat down and wrote for quite a while, until I took a break, and now here I am posting through it (but after my snack, I'll be getting back to it).

My day job is not often stressful, but it demands a lot of context-switching and reactivity. A lot of "eeeep, guess my entire day is calls" kinda days. It's nice to have time set aside for a commitment (writing this fucking book) and to indulge in a little bit of misspent motivation making other things better too.

Where does inspiration come from? Everywhere and everything. It’s in the things we see around us, and in the conversations we have. It’s in the things we read, media we watch, and games we play. I’m heavily inspired by the works of the great horror novelist Hideyuki Kikuchi, more specifically the ongoing Vampire Hunter D series as well as Yashakiden: The Demon Princess. They both capture very unique horror vibes that in themselves feel influenced by anime/manga culture. VHD features a stoic hero on an endless quest, where every book pits him against more over-the-top enemies than the last, while being nestled in a post apocalyptic world unlike any other, with its blend of scifi and fantasy. Yashakiden on the other hand is a sickly sweet vampire series set within Demon City Shinjuku, where humans and monsters have this rough coexistence reliant on agreements between different communities, something that is thrown into disarray when an ancient vampire from another land comes into the mix. Every character is unique, wild, and fantastical in their own deadly way.

I've been writing for three days in a row... I like that! :)

Confession time: I can’t write unless I have a mug of tea in hand, I’m tucked into my favourite corner of the sofa, and relaxing classical music is playing in the background. No lyrics allowed—otherwise, my brain starts analyzing the words instead of writing my own.

It’s my little creative ritual—calm, cozy, and just structured enough to trick my mind into work mode.
