@azphilosopher I think the engineering is better, and it's updated. The goals are different... NovaC is a lunar landing service whereas Surveyor was an Apollo fact finding mission. The payload is delivered with a higher reliability (80% for LM-1 vs 10-15٪ for Surveyor 1). The cost per unit (in adjusted dollars) is improved... about $60M each in 1966‐68 for 7 Surveyors and $118M each today for #NovaC. A more capable craft. My point was that 58 years ago those engineers were visionary.

Seems a good feature for a moon lander would be the ability to turn their engines on again to reposition.

If the #intuitivemachines #NovaC is sitting with its antenna oriented the wrong way they could hop to correct it.

The Japanese #SLIM lander could probably knock itself back onto its proper landing legs.

It was the afternoon in the USA when Intuitive Machines' Nova-C Odysseus lander attempted its Moon landing in the Malapert A crater. It was an autonomous maneuver that constituted the crucial step of the IM-1 mission. It took about 10 minutes to receive the first faint signals from Odysseus but they were invaluable in confirming the Moon landing.

The Intuitive Machines #NovaC #Odysseus lander is impressive and state of the art and successfully made an autonomous landing near the South pole of the Moon. it's lifetime of operations will be about one week long.
This makes me appreciate that 58 years ago (June 2 1966) NASA's Surveyor 1 made its own robotic moon landing in Oceanus Procellarum and returned thousands of pictures from its TV cameras over the 6 months of its lifetime on the moon.
