The vast majority of our collections are not on display. New volunteer @outfossiling helped to tidy up some of our collections store rooms today. This room contains some lovely glass-cased taxidermy specimens and some fossils that are being organised.

A fossil fish from the Lower Jurassic, and the same specimen seen under UV light. The specimen is now on display in a special case with other geological specimens, and taxidermy specimens, where visitors can switch between normal light and UV light.

A drawer of historical bird eggs on display in the Nottingham Natural History Museum. This is part of a display about the diversity of natural history collections and how we preserve and curate natural objects in the museum. Collecting bird eggs is illegal today so many museums have chosen not to display their historical egg collections, but this display is about stories like that, so we have displayed them to discuss the controversy.

Our new display ‘From Mansion to Museum’ tells the history of Wollaton Hall through eight beautiful paper sculptures by artist Trina Brennan. This model recreates a scene of a taxidermy giraffe being moved through Wollaton Park into the Nottingham Natural History Museum.

Can any of you bird brains please identify this skull in our collection? It's simply listed in our database as "bird skull" and there's no provenance data either. Even a broad category would be helpful. I'm wondering if it could be a gull?

UCL student Yasemin visited us today to study and photograph some trilobites in our fossil collection. She is looking at variation within the Silurian species Calymene, better known as the 'Dudley Bug'. We have some lovely examples on display and plenty more in store.

Wollaton Hall was filmed as Batman's abode Wayne Manor in The Dark Knight Rises (2012). So, we were inspired to do something a bit different in our new gallery – an exhibit of superheroes and comic book characters inspired by animals and plants. There are lots!

The idea of juxtaposing 'storage' with 'display' came from an inspiring visit to the Koenig Museum in Bonn 12 years ago. They had (still have?) a section just like this and I'd never seen anything like it before. It impressed and stuck with me. Now I've copied it!
There will be similar sections like this for wet, osteological, egg, plant, and invertebrate collections in a new gallery at Wollaton Hall #NottNatHist Museum.

The displays in our new 'Curating Nature' gallery are gradually taking shape. This section is about geological collections. For each type of collection in this gallery there will be a 'behind the scenes' section to represent storage with objects en mass, juxtaposed with a 'display' section to interpret the collection and highlight key objects and stories.

I've been completely preoccupied this year with a new gallery at the Nottingham Natural History Museum, #WollatonHall.
The new gallery is called 'Curating Nature' and will explore the full gamut of natural history collections including spirit specimens, osteological material, dried and pinned invertebrates, Blaschka glass models, herbarium specimens, geological material, and taxidermy... all to answer the most-asked question by visitors to the museum: is it real?

Can any botanists or planty people out there help me to understand these botanical models? I presume they are different growth stages of a stem or trunk, but I can't find a match on search engines. If that's what they are is it possible to tell what type of plant it represents or what the growth stages are?
These are going on display in a new #NottNatHist museum exhibit about natural history models and I have the task of writing a label for them.
Any help is much appreciated!

This week, Nottingham Trent University lecturer Fred Owen and student Kirsty visited our fossil collections to study our Pleistocene canids.
It helped to have an articulated modern dog skeleton at hand for comparative purposes!

Installation has begun on two new galleries at the #NottNatHist Museum at Wollaton Hall. One gallery - the balcony - will feature a mural painted by @BobNicholls as the backdrop for a display about the history of Wollaton Hall. One half of the mural is already up!

Marine reptile fun! @WitcherClo led an outreach event at Wollaton Hall #NottNatHist Museum a few weeks ago. We challenged visitors to ID the fossil bones of an ichthyosaur and work out where they fit in the skeleton.
