  1. I've been completely preoccupied this year with a new gallery at the Nottingham Natural History Museum, #WollatonHall.

The new gallery is called 'Curating Nature' and will explore the full gamut of natural history collections including spirit specimens, osteological material, dried and pinned invertebrates, Blaschka glass models, herbarium specimens, geological material, and taxidermy... all to answer the most-asked question by visitors to the museum: is it real?

  2. A worm's eye view of a Mamenchisaurus skeleton (a cast with some parts modelled) at Wollaton Hall's temporary Dinosaurs of China exhibition in 2017.

The Great Hall subsequently felt very empty!

  3. Working in the #NottNatHist museum (@GeorgeTheGorilla) this week with @WitcherClo we were surprised to find fossil fish glow under UV light. This specimen of a Lower Jurassic Dapedium fish is a good example.

Can any chemists tell me why though? Original hydroxyapatite and/or diagenetic calcite in the scales? Or could it be some sort of varnish!?

  4. I spent the last two years working on the new Discovering Dinosaurs gallery at Wollaton Hall, which is now open.

Here's one of the display cases with a nesting Oviraptor skeleton on the top!

  5. Recently mated Azure Damselflies flying in tandem as the female lays eggs on Fringed Water-lily. Mystery to me how they co-ordinate moving to the next leaf when the female has laid enough eggs on each one.

  6. This #FossilFriday @richardforrest and I were studying plesiosaur bones in the Nottingham Natural History Museum at WollatonHall

Richard originally described the specimen in 1998, but a lot has changed in plesiosaurology since then, so its time to redescribe it, and possibly name it, in collaboration with @dinosven and @danielmadzia

  7. @BobNicholls For anyone interested you can see Bob's fantastic Liopleurodon pliosaur head model on display at the Nottingham Natural History Museum at Wollaton Hall @GeorgeTheGorilla

  8. This #FossilFriday I've been drawing an ankylosaur osteoderm for a team paper I'm working on.

This fossil specimen from the Jurassic Oxford Clay is in the #NottNatHist museum at #WollatonHall with @GeorgeTheGorilla
