scathing review from the guardian linked below according to which this is just a poor copy of “Friends”.
Never mind that Friends was a really shit imitation of a show called Living Single, which i cannot watch in australia because it was pushed out by Friends…
and isn’t it true that there are only 7 potential stories (one for each of the deadly sins)?
And why can’t we have a new show set in an apartment building? one that reflects the world view and world of a whole new generation?
(the more i think about this review, the more petty it seems)
Friends and Seinfeld are two comedies i cannot get excited about…partly because i have completely lost my sense of humour, or something…
the viewing equivalent of “first world problems” is watching totally white shows — esp from USA
call me jaded, but whatever “drama” white people are suffering through is usually a yawnanyway, have just binged my way through something heavy
and was looking for something to keep on in the background and ignore, but not be annoyed by if i temporarily zone in.Not Suitable For Work is fluff. It’s the Mills and Boon version of a sitcom, I guess, but that’s okay, cos they actually have demanding story construction standards.
I give not suitable for work 4 stars out of 5 for not being cast entirely with white people
6 additional stars out of 5 for not having canned laughter.
Throw in an extra 4 bonus stars for not having some busy soundtrack music mixed in by someone who thinks moments of silence are an abomination, or worse yet, sound that is uneven and requires one constantly adjust the volumeconsidering how much of the content on streaming services is really crap, this is a find
the first episode suffers, I think, because the “conflict” that makes classic sitcoms work is missing.
Take the odd couple as an example - two completely opposite personalities bound to clash;
Steptoe and son — a rag and bone man who identifies as working class, and his aspirational son; The Rag Trade — Plautus’ classic The Slave modernised etcthat said… from the second episode this improves markedly, and has some nice moments in it
