  1. When religious lobbyists realised that the Australian Bureau of Statistics was proposing to change the Census religion question to remove its 'leading' nature, they mounted a media campaign and called for the government to intervene.

Instead of having a question that would produce a more accurate picture of religious and non-religious affiliation for all Australians, religious lobbyists demanded that the existing question remain so that they could more easily compare the result with past Censuses — while also continuing to benefit from overstated religiosity figures.

  2. If you don’t want someone else from your household answering the Census religion question on your behalf, don't worry.

At Census time this year, you will be able to access a separate, private Census form from the Australian Bureau of Statistics.

With this form, you will be able to override all other answers given for you on the main household form.

  3. The Census religion question – ‘What is the person’s religion?’ – assumes every respondent has a religion. This leads to inaccurate responses with results that overstate the number of religious people in Australia. Find out more: censusnotreligious.org.au
