Anyway sorry for the long Tagalog rant. I'm just so fucking tired of this jeepney modernization issue cropping up over and over like a broken record. The delay of this long overdue measure was never the jeepney driver-operators' fault. It certainly isn't the commuters' fault either, who are tired of riding rotting, unsafe jeepneys everyday. We are all fucking tired!
The true cause of this problem is the government's socialism. And yes, socialism is not simply when "government does stuff". Socialism actually is when you do not understand basic economics and keep prices artificially low so you can say you're doing "good for the people". The government, via the LTFRB has for over a decade artificially kept the minimum fare below what a driver-operator needs to profit. 13 pesos per passenger is not enough to breakeven without resorting to desperate measures like dangerously cutting off other jeepney drivers for passengers, or making the jeepney look like a sardine can by pushing in as many passengers inside as possible without any regard for their comfort or safety.
Without profit, they cannot maintain their jeeps in good condition, let alone buy the overpriced imported minibuses the government is pushing. They cannot invest in their own local manufacturers who could easily make cheaper alternatives (but still modern and still look like jeepneys!) to the imported ones coming from Japan, South Korea and China.
This is something the Philippine Left will never understand, and while I salute their efforts over the years in giving a voice to the jeepney drivers and advocating for a decent livelihood instead of the slave-like life they have right now, I am not optimistic they will resolve the problem correctly. They might just make the same mistake as the LTFRB. The Left needs to rethink its solutions, which isn't enough. Having the government pay for 50% of the price of modern jeepneys is just the same as ayuda or diesel subsidies done during the height of the COVID pandemic. Having state-sponsored local factories producing cheaper modern jeeps is still a band-aid solution if not paired with truly free fare prices. Our driver-operators need to afford them without government help if we are going to modernize all of our public transportation.
In the end the Philippine government hates Filipino capitalism and the free market, and as a result the people suffer while our politicians get rich from kickbacks from every minibus imported into our country

As long as #jeepney drivers and operators cannot afford the newer minibuses being pushed by the comprador government, and cooperatives can't absorb all of the driver-operators who will lose their franchises, the transport sector will never be almost unanimous in supporting the ineffective #PUV "modernization" program. :seija_coffee:
We must resist this hostile corporate takeover of our #publictransport!

During massive strikes and protests against reform plans that would remove the iconic Jeepney ride from the streets, thousands of public transport workers paralyzed the central Philippine capital, Manila.
Jeepneys are a crucial pillar of the Philippines' public transportation system, providing an affordable and accessible means of transportation for millions of Filipino workers, particularly in urban areas.
