Soooo what are "public interest topics" and who defines those?
Also how do you put solid watermarks into any content? Sure there are things like what Google is doing, but those can be easily circumvented. -

I set one of my students the task of writing a tool for sustainability analysis of Claude Code.
They used Claude Code to generate the tool. It does the wrong thing. They have no idea why.
Their grade depends on writing code that does the right thing and being able to explain why and how. We are halfway through the project.

The new #HuggingFace dataset is doing the rounds, but it seems less well known that any older data was crawled by Software Heritage
https://www.softwareheritage.org
and then they partnered with HuggingFace
https://www.softwareheritage.org/2023/12/04/hugging-face-2/
Despite being in France and having an innocuous name, their practice is quite the same.

Damn. Even Mastodon. I had hoped for better. Fortunately I'm used to disappointment.

This site shows genAI/"LLM" contributions to a lot of open source software. It is a depressingly long list.

You don't have to blog like me.
You don't have to differentiate by post kind.
You don't have to put full contents in your feed.
You don't have to keep a library of "maybe-some-day"
drafts so long that you'll never reach the bottom. You don't have to have a comments form.
Or reactions. Or webmentions.
Or a guestbook. Or drawings?
(But give me some way to say "hi, you're cool!")You don't have to have a feature image.
You don't have to keep posts up forever.
You don't have to have tags.
You don't have to syndicate to the socials. You don't have to stick to one topic.
Or three. Or seventeen.
Or be able to answer "what's your blog about?"
It's yours, and that's enough.You don't have to post on a schedule.
You don't have to use your real name.
You don't have to have a podcast.
You don't have to tell everybody. You don't have to use any particular tool.
Bloggers who spend their time arguing
About ClassicPress vs WriteFreely vs Bear vs Middleman
Could be reading and writing instead. You don't have to have a plan to "monetize".
You don't have to write your own theme.
You don't have to be run your own server.
You don't have to make every post your best. You just have to blog.
The Internet is ours.
It belongs to the humans. Not to the companies and the robots.
To us.And every human voice.
Every single human voice.
Makes the world a little richer. You don't have to blog like me.
(You don't have to use "blog" as a verb.)You just have to blog.

In 2025:
Global gas consumption grew by 1.6%
Global coal consumption grew by 0.7%
Global oil consumption grew by 1.3%
[1]GHG emissions grew by 2.3% as a result. [2]
Data centres are the fastest growing sources of emissions.[2]

Regarding the AI data centre water usage, this ought to be obvious but "use 100% air‑cooled, closed‑loop cooling systems for new data centers" means they will use more energy for cooling and so increase emissions.

While this is almost bound to be nonsense hype, it is far more certain that government’s response will be “more AI to fight the AI because AI! Make everyone have/use AI all the time!”… rather than, say, maintaining real-world resilience that enables continued function regardless of AI or other interference.
See also my past posts on keeping “legacy” systems that are more reliable in extremis such as normal telephones, analogue radio broadcasting, flood sirens… -

"These concerns are not superficial, they are fundamental. The semantics of the world cannot be captured with purely abstract symbols unless the environment is highly constrained."

#NoToAI(from "Limits to Verification and Validation of Agentic Behavior" , a paper from 2018 by David J. Jilk)
-
"If the agent gains reward through killing a human, it will find a method that does not violate its fixed set of rules. If, in contrast, we attempt to characterize the action abstractly, such as “do not be the cause of a human’s death,” then we have deferred the problem to the word “cause,” which is fraught with other difficulties, such as assignment of responsibility or risk."
(2/3)
#NoToAI -
"Take for example a system that has the mandate “never kill a human” expressed in some logical form. Let us stipulate that the system is able to distinguish humans from non-humans successfully. What does it mean to “kill”? The semantics must be elaborated in some sort of model within the agent. Suppose that such a model elaborates various methods of killing and their associated instruments, such as weapons or poisons. We can be confident that such a taxonomy can never be complete."

Google Scholar is now also poisoned by AI: the snippets under the title results have nothing to do with the papers themselves.
(This not simply a result of the term not occurring anywhere: if I move the year range to after 2021, I get a mix of actual papers on the topic and this kind of slop.)
-
I posted about this before, that data centres are increasingly considering burning gas instead of connecting to the electricity grid. This means of course they will increase emissions even if the grid decarbonises.
The problem is much worse than I thought. According to the UK gas networks, more than a hundred data centre projects enquired about direct access to the gas network. We're talking about gigawatts of energy from gas.

why
why
whyare they shoving AI into our lives like this?
I do not want my social media to have AI. I do not want my Search engine have AI.
I do not want my word processor to have AI.
I do not want my phone to have AI.I just don't want AI for any freaking thing.
Now they even selling fridges and vaccume cleaner with AI in them.

Is there a standard way to say "I don't consent for AIs/LLMs to be trained on this content" ?
A license, logo or just a statement.
I am well aware they will ignore it ! But I want to put it to make a point regardless.
Thanks !
