I #vibecoded in 2h a simple #app to manage shared expenses for trips with friends. When I was showing it, the obvious question came up:
“But surely there’s already an app for this, no?” 🤔
And the answer is: yes, I’m 100% sure there are many. 🤷♂️
BUT… finding them, comparing them, testing them, creating an account, discovering the free version is too limited, realizing they don’t work exactly the way you want, getting annoyed, trying another one… 🥱🥱🥱 can easily take more time than building the perfect tiny solution for your own use case.
I accept this is a new variant of the #NotInventedHere syndrome. Except that this time, for a not-so-small category of simple but useful apps, it actually makes sense.
Not because we should rebuild everything. But because sometimes the fastest path is not searching for the right tool. It is creating the small tool you need.
The app itself is very simple: basically a web wrapper on top of an Excel file.

What's that? #ubuntusnaps are badly designed for desktop usage? Who knew?
Scroll my feed whydontcha.
#Flatpak, #AppImage, take your pick. Much better integration and uses standard #SELinux - instead of having to suffer #Canonical and their #NotInventedHere syndrome with #AppArmor.

Build what you need?
I do not wholly subscribe to the mantra of “build what you need”. To an extent, yes, make the thing you want. Only, stop doing that as soon as someone invents a less square wheel than yours. Use their wheel instead.

I'm guessing that Bell Labs was the only place totally immune to Not Invented Here Syndrome, because everything really was invented there. [1]
Thoughts?
[1] To a first approximation, anyway.

My biggest #WWDC25 thing is about #JPEGXL. Will #Apple continue with it, since #Google has been extraordinarily #NotInventedHere in trying to kill it in the wild and in open source? Or will Apple be Apple (of old) and keep using it because it's damn good, because Apple controls its own hardware, and because it's the right thing to do?
If Apple bails on JPEGXL it'll make me far more worried than will any other single thing.

Not Invented Here syndrome.
Microsoft was not "into" standards. They wanted to own and control the tech they used; if they had to use something developed by others, they used their infamous "embrace, extend, extinguish" technique.
They didn't really start getting interested in using standards until much later.

Klassischer Fall von #NotInventedHere-Syndrom vielleicht? -
If you've been following me for a while you know that:
1) I'm a loud advocate of good UX above everything else.
2) I'm not a fan of the "design systems".Why (2)? Because largely I believe it failed to deliver (1). From my experience Design Systems are an awesome drop-in solution for 99% of *anyone's* cases if and only if:
a) You take the design system as-is and are willing to bend your design choices so it does not violate said design system.
b) You don't develop your own design system (this would directly violate (a)).
c) Everyone in the team understands the interactions and intentions of every piece perfectly.Sadly pretty much every company violates any or all of the above.

Ok, say it with me:
"We don't need to come up with new solutions. The answer is already in the documentation. We just need to read."
#notInventedHere is bad for consistency, training, onboarding, and support. Please read the RFC.

#NotInventedHere is rerunning old cartoons on startup life, and I had to share this one… https://notinventedhe.re/on/2011-10-26 #OpenSource

@markgurman They are coming down from the #notinventedhere mentality. I believe the remainder of this decade is gonna be a challenging period for #Apple. It’s going through it’s wilderness period. But they might be better prepared to ride it out compared #Microsoft back in the 2000’s. If #Google gets weaker due to flaws in their #generativeai strategy, maybe Apple could merge:absorb them for strategic competitiveness.

> [I] was the designer of Blogger...
Seems to me that it's a combination of #NotInventedHere and #SourGrapes that's resulting in some "charged language".
> I wasn't asking you
And before you block me, nobody asked you for your opinion either.

@Radical_EgoCom @JenWithGravy @hapbt @CatDragon
Then you have #Syndicatism and #Cooperativism, not #Anarchism!
Again: The most crucial problems are:
1. "How do we get there?"
2. "How do we prevent power-hungry assholes from destroying it?"And so far noone has provided a solution for neother of those important problems.
As long as these remain "#NotInventedHere" and/or "#CantFix" and/or "#WontFix" that utopia won't materialize!

- KEINE textliche Verwendung? So eine...

@transit The #TorontoStar has some ideas on making it happen. Shameful that #Bell, #Rogers and #Telus are refusing to deal - some kind of #NotInventedHere syndrom, so their egos require them to go it themselves? How much will #TTC riders be disrupted having three more sets of #Cellular infrastructure installed?

gist: problem is the profs, not the resources
So true! One thing that #ChatGPT (-like services) will do is make creating new content a "copy and edit" job. #OER already enables that!
I don't understand why people would want to create 100+ pages from scratch rather than edit 100+ pages to fit what they need. For me at least, editing is much easier and faster.
As you say, just another case of #NotInventedHere mentality.

Why would a [to remain unnamed] community college spend time and money creating "open" educational resources - and give them to students for free or very inexpensively - but not make them available under #CreativeCommons licenses for others to also use?
Great that they are reducing costs for their students, but is this maybe just a #NotInventedHere syndrome thing?
#OER should by truly open, not just "available".

@Captanne Have to disagree. The mRNA platforms were/are far more effective than CHN's homegrown platforms, but since #NotInventedHere, could not be used, because that would be conceding Western leadership, which CCP/Xi cannot do.
PLUS, seniors, those most vulnerable to COVID, do not trust the govt enough to take the govt's vaccine, and so their uptake has been and is pathetic. That, I think, says a LOT. What all, I leave to CHN observers and analysts.

Whoever developed this app made sure to really use every third-party library in existence in 2014... A pure nightmare. And if a feature was already covered back then by Spring, they made sure to write something custom just because they could. Very strong #NotInventedHere syndrome...

@austinkocher @Mastodon I'm interested in Blue Sky. It looks like they've put a lot of thought into the protocol and how federation can work. There's also consideration of moving accounts between servers.
But now I've seen how Mastodon works, Blue Sky looks derivative.
I can't decide whether Jack Dorsey is completely ignorant of Mastodon, or he's suffering from #NotInventedHere syndrome and just trying to do the same thing under his name.

Warum fragt der #SWR dann nicht einfach die Expert.innen von #ADFC und #VCD? -
The #NotInventedHere syndrome is problematic.
It it said that it forces software developers (and maybe other engineers too) to reimplement wheels when perfectly good implementations already exist.
That's a lie.
It's a lie for 2 reasons:
1. If the existing implementation is perfectly good, we would have used it.
2. If a perfectly good implementation existed, everyone would use it, and we could have stumbled across it in our searches.
