Upscaled - an aggressive verb.
Mrs Miasma, Mother-in-Law Miasma and I went out for lunch yesterday.
We'd been to this particular restaurant several times before but we noticed they have put in nicer furniture and up-scaled the overall appearance in the interior.
The other thing we noticed was that the check for two cheeseburgers (with fries) and some salmon tacos was now $100.
I think we may have just purchased some of the wall art for their new look. 😲

@Ramesh #NotGoingBack They are, about the same amount as western countries did for Jews during the Holocaust. Literally that's why there are now international refugee laws, because it was recognized that other countries didn't do their part in accepting Jewish refugees. Read a book, dude.
And no, when you plop a million people down on someone's home and tell those native people that they have to leave or be killed, you're starting the war then. The war doesn't start when they inevitably retaliate against your invasion of their home. -

She absolutely did. I was outraged to hear her story. Sending my love and strength to her family. Not only did they have the heartbreak of Adriana's tragic sudden death..now they have to deal with the trauma of her being kept alive as an incubator, a very premature baby that may not make it or be severely disabled, and a grieving little boy who thought his mama was asleep. (broke my heart)
We can't let this barbarism go on.

I disagree wIth a couple of things in the article, but that’s not important.
The important thing is an action, on Tuesday, December 3rd, 2024: “LGBTQ+ People Are Not Going Back.”
The article suggests a few things but not everyone has a platform for that. Maybe I post something here for #JohnMastodon to read. But that seems like preaching to the converted. I have a few days to think of something else.
Maybe we need a hashtag. With my favourite hashtag as a free bonus.

I'm old enough to remember an older kid on my block who DID contract polio before the vaccine was invented. He was fortunate that it was a mild case, but I frequently overheard my parents talking about how lucky we were that me and my sister were born after the vaccine was invented. #NotGoingBack

Well, I did it. I finally left the bird-hell site in the dust (Bite me, Elon!). Deactivated my account today. There is a lot of good info and good people still there but I simply cannot any longer.
I am angry, sad, frustrated, disappointed, confused, frightened . . . and determined that the darkness will not win.
But for now, I grieve.

Coming back online to post this video series by historian Timothy Snyder. It is an adaptation of his work "On Tyranny: 20 Lessons from the 20th Century", expanded with additional commentary after Jan 6, 2021. It is 20 lessons on resisting authoritarianism. I found the videos clear and instructive.

I've been offline for a while due to IRL stuff and due to avoiding news about the US election. Now that the results are in though, I wanted to share this:

Many people in my industry / field of work / network are "institutional insiders". I think this is a really relevant quote from the article:
"By themselves, rulers cannot collect taxes, enforce repressive laws and regulations, keep trains running on time, prepare national budgets, direct traffic, manage ports, print money, repair roads, keep markets supplied with food, make steel, build rockets, train the police and army, issue postage stamps or even milk a cow. People provide these services to the ruler though a variety of organizations and institutions. If people would stop providing these skills, the ruler could not rule."
Finally, what I like about the article is that the author talked to people living or who lived under authoritarianism for a practical idea of what it's like and how to survive it.
