  41. @geffrey #iA Writer supports links now but not backlinks iirc. Should be pretty close to what you’re looking for. Cross platform except for Linux.

Herb Bowie’s #Notenik might also be worth checking out. It looks a lot more minimal than Obsidian and is a Mac-only free and open source app written in Swift. Free download on the App Store.

  42. Notenik version 13.0.0 is out!

This is a Mac app, available at no charge through the Mac App Store.

A number of problems fixed, and a few nice new enhancements.

I think all of the content for this release was based on user feedback, either through email or through the Notenik Discourse forum.

This is also the first release containing a code change submitted by another contributor to the Notenik Open Source project!

  44. @dhrystone If you can get it to work, a lot of folks are going to be interested. It gets asked about regularly in the #Obsidian Discord. I’m guessing it works with Word because MS built it into the web app and that’s integrated with the desktop version and OneDrive. I’d be very surprised if it works any better with #Notenik, since that uses plaintext md files, too.

  45. @EpiphanicSynchronicity I have Obsidian syncing via iCloud on Windows, MacBook, iPhone and iPad. Over the months I have edited the files on all three and have had no sync problems at all but in thinking about it I don’t edit the same file at the same time (within the time that it takes to sync changes that is) so.. I suppose not apples to apples. Still, I would expect that the syncing shouldn’t create a separate file to host any conflict, especially since I actually see a window in Obsidian saying “changes, merging” or something like that for a second or two.

It COULD be something to do with OneDrive though, see attached pic. I just downloaded all files locally via OneDrive and will ask my work partner to do the same and see if that fixes it. If not, have to walk away from Obs for this or maybe try an alternative like #Notenik.

  46. I've been gratified again in recent days to have a #blind user reach out to let me know how useful #Notenik is to them. Since my app 's UI is all built on straight AppKit, Apple's VoiceOver utility comes along for free, and apparently makes the app quite usable for those with limited or no vision.

  47. Another new version of Notenik out: 12.8.0. Main thrust of this release is increased interoperability with iA Writer (especially for those wishing to use that app to access their notes on iOS devices).

  48. Notenik 12.1.0 is out and available for free download from the Mac App Store. This release includes a couple of new Markdown extensions that will generate an outline with disclosure triangles within the body of a Note, based on either embedded headings or unordered lists. Also, there is an OPML import available for either style of outline.

  49. @ellane @qwxlea @[email protected] Thanks for the #notenik mention! There is a discourse forum at discourse.notenik.app for questions/feature requests, etc. Also happy to interact here.

  50. @catominor @EpiphanicSynchronicity @obsidianmd I'm spreading the illusion as far and wide as possible. I'm intentionally crafting my notes so they function almost identically in #Obsidian and #iaWriter, with #Notenik being a close third. Notenik honours Obsidian's YAML, and it's FOSS.

  51. Notenik 11.6.0 is now out in the Mac App store. It's free and open-source.

This release improves the functionality of the Collection Setting requesting Notenik to 'Open External Links in new Tabs/Windows,' something added in 11.5.0.

Also added a new Markdown command to make a table sortable, by clicking on its column headings.

And also improved some of the default CSS styling, especially when it comes to links.

  52. #Obsidian wishlist item № 1: Links between vaults.

I keep peeking over the fence into #Notenik’s backyard, admiring the way disparate collections of notes live separate lives while retaining the ability to wikilink back and forth. It’s reminiscent of the Fediverse, while Obsidian is more like a closed shop.

I *could* embrace nested vaults in Obsidian, but there are dangers in so doing that I’m not willing to take on at this point.

  53. There's another new version of Notenik -- 11.5.0 -- out in the Mac App Store, with a few bug fixes, plus a new Collection setting to make external links open in new tabs/windows.

The new Collection setting was something I did for my own benefit, but another user immediately said the enhancement had made his day (which made my day!).

Ongoing slow, organic, incremental improvements -- that's the course I've been following for three years now, and it's still the path we're on. No telling where it will end!

  56. @ellane @ia Well, honestly, that's one of the reasons why I wrote my own notes app: #Notenik. The first version, written in Java, was written in 2009, and at that point it was consolidating functionality that had previously existed in several other, separate apps. I rewrote it in Swift about three years ago. I use Notenik to maintain several websites, my oldest having been first published in 2001. So I want/need a solid base of functionality that will not disappear and will not be deprecated. Plus Notenik is all open-source, so others can modify it if needed. In my case, though, I don't need to worry about my favorite notes app going away, because I'm the one who maintains it. (Sorry, I suppose my answer is a bit of a cheat, but I couldn't resist.)

  57. If something happened and you couldn't keep using your favourite notes app, what would be your second choice? Why? If I couldn't use #Obsidian, I'd use iA Writer @ia, and look more seriously at #Notenik. The more my notes can be accessed by a wide number of #markdown apps, the better.

  58. #Obsidian, #Logseq, #iaWriter, #Ulysses, #Notenik. Bicycles with a different feel, but bicycles nonetheless. Some have optional outboard motors, but I'm usually happy to cycle along (most of the time) and enjoy the view.

  59. Version 11.0.0 of my Mac App Notenik was just released. This included the following enhancements: Added option to format a shared Note as a Microblog post; Added option to send a shared Note to your Web browser, where it can be easily printed or saved as a PDF; Wiki link formatting now defaults more reasonably when processing with a Merge Template; Web Book navigation now available when using Merge Templates; Corrected a bug that could cause a crash with Lookup fields.
