Fascinating article by Anne Lawrence-Mathers on the _Ars Notoria_. Thank you for the Lichtenbergian assignment!
As you say, the visual element in the Ars Notoria book is interesting. The whole presentation feels very current.
As does the desire by its medieval users to bypass actual learning through the use of arcane methods unrelated to the subject matter. The association with current LLM practices is striking, and rather amusing.
And, just like today's genAI users need to develop ever more sophistiated layers of prompt-management skills, so the medieval Ars Notoria users struggled to meet the extensive technical demands of invoking the substitute methods. Then as now, one wants to ask these users: why not do the real thing?

You can even try to make your #PTA more democratic, which is what I focus on. But there are #NoShortcuts. If it feels like a shortcut, it is. If it feels like it's a little uncomfortable, like something you're not sure you can pull off, something new, something energizing, something that can connect you to someone in a way you weren't connected before, then you're on the right track.

And explicit in our Jewish tradition that carves out particular sacred times and spaces and also creates opportunities for us to invoke the divine in almost every activity of our lives. Ideally there’s a positive feedback loop between those kinds of practice. My guess is that those who show up in a formal prayer space are much more likely to find holiness outside them as well. #noshortcuts
