  1. The last evening of sitting out on the deck watching the lake for this year. We need to head home tomorrow from our family cabin and it doesn't look like we'll have another chance to get up here before it gets closed up in October. It was built over 100 years ago by my great- great uncle and needs to be drained before the pipes freeze since the only heat is a small wood stove. At least we did get 3 visits this year.

  3. Visited the Winter Greenhouse again today. While my spouse was shopping (he's the gardener in our family) I wandered around and admired the display gardens.

  4. This lovely stand of zig-zag goldenrod is just outside our family cabin. It looked so pretty today with the sunshine on it. #nativeplants #northernwisconsin #bloomscrolling @gardening

  5. If you're lucky enough to live in the northern part of the United States, check out that light show that is going on tonight!

  6. Our high today is 52°F/11°C, which is 20-25°F/13-15°C warmer than the mean this time of year. Tonight it's only supposed to drop down to 45°F/7°C, which is 30-40°F/18-22°C warmer than the mean this time of year.

The lakes that had started to freeze over are open once again. Not a flake of snow remains to speak of.

A lot of people up here will be hurting if it doesn't get cold and snow soon.

  7. #NorthernWisconsin #ChristmasEve Nearly 50°F/10°C outside today. I'm guessing that we may be getting close to some record temps today/tomorrow. Last year around this time we already had a foot of snow. I think NOAA out of Duluth has only recorded ~4 green Christmas Eves/Days in the last 70 years. This is *WILD*.

It's so wild, that when I checked my mushroom logs, I happened upon a good handful of Blue Oysters. Yum!

  8. One of the neat things I get to say because of where I live: "Heard the wolves howling tonight. Sounded kind of distant. Like they're following the Chippewa off to the west."

Fun fact: I'm ~4 miles south and ~5 miles east of the Chippewa River. These hills and valleys CARRY sound. I can hear trains passing through the town 10 straight miles away.

Also wolves howling > coyotes howling, most days. I do enjoy the yips during the summer, though.

  10. Puppy butts!

This photo is actually from last evening. *Most* of the Halloween snow had melted away.

There was a deer down in this area off the driveway (that the goats cleared for us earlier this summer) when my wife and I got home from work yesterday. Apparently the dogs could smell it.

    Heads down, tails up!

  11. Autumn isn't just spooky season because of Halloween and horror movies. In fact, spooky season usually starts earlier for those of us in the #Northwoods.

Last night was nerve wracking for the garden. That F-word was lingering in the air: FROST. NOAA issued a Frost Advisory yesterday afternoon for areas of patchy frost. Prepping for potential frost, Bobbi harvested what looks to be 10-15lbs (~5-8kg) of tomatoes while I was still at work.

  12. Most people who know me will tell you I get excited about some of the stupidest, tiniest things.

Today's thing: on a trip to grab some things in Rice Lake, #wi I saw an old Smithway trucking company trailer in the wild.

My dad and my grandfather used to be #truckdrivers in the town in #Iowa where Smithway used to be headquartered. I live 5-6 hours away from there in #northernWisconsin. So that's just kind of neat.

  13. @whknott Such a sweet pup!

Yeah, when people ask what a Catahoula is, I just say "Imagine a mix between a Pit Bull and a Blue Heeler."

She's got the power of a Pit Bull and the drive of a Cattle Dog.

Adopted her back in October. She's a Texas shelter dog transfered to a shelter in #northernwisconsin. Found out she was 100% Catahoula when we did an Embark DNA test. Until then I had no idea what a Catahoula was either. Great dog. But I understand why they say not everyone needs one. Haha

  14. Well, hello! Looks like I ought to do an #introduction here.

Hi! I'm Adam. I recently drifted into the Fediverse with the Great
#RedditMigration of July 2023. I've already dabbled with Mastodon and kBin. Now I'm dipping my toes into Calkey.

    I'm originally from
#Iowa but live in #Wisconsin now. Like, far #northernwisconsin.

My wife and I have a tiny farm where we have a small
#garden and are mob-ruled by our flock of #chickens, #ducks, and #geese. We've also employed the help of the tiniest herd of tiny Nigerian Dwarf #goats to help us fight back some of the invasive honeysuckle and buckthorn that seems to have taken over our little homestead.

    We also have two
#cats, two #dogs, and a very independent, "wild" #rabbit that my wife actually rescued from a food bank garden.

    My interests include, but are not limited to;

    • Current events/politics
    • Culture/history/language
    • Food

  17. Jagger from January of last year. He’s somewhat bummed out it finally warmed up enough here and the snow is finally gone.

  18. 11 degrees below zero at the moment but had to stop the Impala on what I refer to as “Driveway Zero One” here at my place and take a shot of the sunrise through the trees, 14 March, 2023.

  19. A sorta “calm before the storm” type thing this morning on the way into work; winter storm watch tonight into tomorrow with potential heavy snow in the forecast. Oh, well.
