  1. Male #NorthernShoveler in flight.

    I have a preference for these ducks. I love the delicate light blue of their wing covers and, of course, their beak that is their special feature. I also like their “feeding circles”.

  2. Refollowing people is going to be a pain… I guess we’d better have some ducks in the meantime, and then I can reintroduce myself having shifted servers…

    This #FiveDuckFriday we have four #TuftedDucks and more importantly a majestic #Shoveler, which is the #DuckOfTheDay

  3. Kurz bevor mir die Finger wegfrieren, heben für einen kurzen Moment doch noch beide Löffelenten die Löffelschnäbel aus dem Wasser.

  9. Two immature male Northern Shovelers on thin ice. Literally, I mean: the temp still dipped below 0 at night in Delta, and some ponds were at least partially frozen with a super thin layer of ice. So thin that ducks would occasionally fall through and then struggle-flap to get out, all embarrassed -- Reifel Bird Sanctuary, February 16

  10. A bit of #BirdPhotography, all #Ducks, from yesterday's visit to #KenfigPool. Unfortunately, not the sharpest of shots as they were mostly at some distance and have been heavily cropped. They are, clockwise from top left;

    - #Pochard
    - #Wigeon
    - #TuftedDucks and #LongTailedDuck
    - #Teal and #NorthernShoveler

  11. Visiting Koll Center Wetlands in Beaverton today, the full aquatic contingent was out on the lake: #Mallard #Gadwall #GreenWingedTeal #NorthernShoveler #RingNeckedDuck #RuddyDuck #Bufflehead #PiedBilledGrebe #AmericanCoot. Stalking the shallow margins, #GreatEgret in pure white and #GreatBlueHeron in shaggy gray. #BeltedKingfisher rattling from a snag, and #BlackPhoebe flitting from perch to perch with high sweet little cries. A mob of crows seeing off a #RedTailedHawk.

  14. Never noticed this before, but on a wetland visit yesterday it struck me that the #Gadwall flocks are suddenly out of anonymous eclipse plumage and back into their dapper grays for breeding - but none of the other #ducks are. They are on different schedules! Now I wonder why. Sibley guide does give time frames for initiating breeding plumage: Sep for Gadwall, Oct for #AmericanWigeon, #Mallard, & #GreenWingedTeal, Nov for #NorthernPintail, and not until Dec for #NorthernShoveler.
