Mockingbird Song
I took this photo a few days ago (today is 31 March 2024), it is fresh off of my camera. I like the composition and thought it might be a good candidate for a black and white photo, but in the end, I decided color looked best. This is a northern mockingbird (Mimus polyglottos) atop an old pine tree. Hmmm ... just yesterday, at a moment when I was camera less, I saw two mockingbirds chasing a crow away.

Ruffled but Resolute
I came across this rather ragged‑looking northern mockingbird during a walk a while back. It’s hard not to see a bird like that and wonder what it’s been through. Maybe it’s just a bit worn from the season, or maybe it had been caught in the rain — either way, it looked like it had weathered something.

Leafy Haven
I saw this Northern Mockingbird (Mimus polyglottos) in Georgia back in 2023. I like the colors and the overall composition of the photo. A little more detail in the bird would be nice, but it works well as it is.

Mockingbird on the Line
I spotted this bird one morning while out walking. Its silhouette caught my eye and made me think, “What is that?” It turned out to be a northern mockingbird (Mimus polyglottos). I often find that mockingbirds have a kind of chameleon‑like quality; seen from different angles or in different poses, they can look like entirely different birds. More than once I’ve thought I’d discovered something new, only to realize it was a mockingbird all along. Still, each encounter feels special.

Mockingbird in Still Light
I found this an intriguing angle on the northern mockingbird (Mimus polyglottos). For a moment, I almost didn’t recognize it.

Mockingbird in the White Silence
A couple of mornings ago, Charlie and I were out walking when I spotted a bird perched quietly overhead. It was early—shade blanketed everything—so what I saw was mostly silhouette and suggestion. This morning, I lightened the image and noticed a surprising blue coronation. I paused, thinking: That’s not a blue jay. Besides, blue jays don’t usually linger on power lines.
Turns out it’s a Northern Mockingbird (Mimus polyglottos), though its plumage is bluer than I’m used to seeing. I like the image—it’s soft, almost ethereal, yet holds remarkable detail.

Mockingbird Tribunal
This morning, while out walking with my dog Charlie, I witnessed a bit of nature’s drama. An American crow (Corvus brachyrhynchos) was perched in a tangle of branches atop a tree, while a couple of northern mockingbirds (Mimus polyglottos) were harassing it—evidently trying to coax the larger bird to move on.

Wingbeat Between Branches
I posted an image of this bird yesterday perched on a branch. Here is one of the northern mockingbird (Mimus polyglottos) flying through the foliage.

Mockingbird in Green Silence
I have a wonderful image of this bird in flight, but I had trouble identifying it this morning, so I processed this still frame instead to make things easier. At first glance through the lens, I thought it might be a blue jay—there were plenty of them around. But something didn’t sit right. Too gray, too small. Then I considered a blue-gray gnatcatcher, but it was clearly too large, and the wing bars ruled that out immediately.
As it turns out, it’s a Northern Mockingbird (Mimus polyglottos)—a species I’m familiar with, though I rarely see one in my backyard, which functions as a kind of open aviary. I think it was the coloring and posture, paired with the fact that I wasn’t expecting to see one there, that threw me off.

Mockingbird, Morning
While Charlie and I were walking yesterday, I photographed what I believed to be a Northern Mockingbird (Mimus polyglottos). But when I looked at the photo later, I wasn’t so sure—something about the raptor-ish gaze and the speckled breast gave me pause. Still, I was right. It’s a mockingbird—a juvenile.

Predator’s Pause
I originally thought the insect in this image was a dragonfly, but now I suspect it’s probably a grasshopper. Either way, it clearly caught the attention of this northern mockingbird (Mimus polyglottos). They seem to be getting along quite well—though, to be fair, that’s probably only true from the mockingbird’s perspective.

Looking Out on the Realm
Northern Mockingbirds (Mimus polyglottos) are known for their fierce territorial instincts. This individual perches atop a young pine, keenly surveying the landscape below—perhaps watching for intruders, or scanning for an unsuspecting insect stirred by the wind.
My photo gallery features over 1300 carefully selected images. While most are chosen for their visual appeal, a few stand out as novelty shots. Feel free to explore my gallery at:

Songbird on a Wire
I always bring my camera on my walks, ready for whatever the morning reveals. Today, I spotted the usual bluebirds and mockingbirds perched on the power lines, their silhouettes crisscrossing the route. Across the highway, a northern mockingbird (Mimus polyglottos) caught my eye, and I managed to capture it mid-song—perhaps offering a playful mockery as we trudged down the road.

Good morning. 🐦🐦🐦
23 May 2025
As I take my first few sips of coffee, trying to wake up, my mind slowly comes alive.
When I was in the Army, I once heard someone say, "I'm too drunk to read a map—I better drive." Fortunately, nothing tragic came of it, but the risk was undeniable. Every day, millions of people get behind the wheel after drinking, convinced they’re fine to make it home. Some even rationalize that they drive better after a few drinks—they don’t. The consequences go far beyond a ticket or a lost license; they endanger lives. At worst, vehicular homicide can occur—an offense that, in Louisiana, carries 5 to 30 years in prison along with hefty fines. Worse yet, they might not survive their own recklessness.
Don't drink and drive.

The Northern Mockingbird pair are mostly absent from their nest. I guess the ambient temperature is warm enough that they don’t feel the need to lay on the eggs?

Fluffy Mockingbird
Perched atop a white fence with a dense forest as its backdrop, this northern mockingbird (Mimus polyglottos) appears charming at first glance. However, its puffed-up feathers likely serve a purpose beyond aesthetics—an attempt to make itself look larger, possibly issuing a silent warning to another bird nearby. Its posture suggests a moment of territorial assertion rather than simple relaxation, a subtle display of dominance in the avian world.

Predator
I’m not sure what species of dragonfly this is, but it certainly caught the attention of the northern mockingbird (Mimus polyglottos). From the mockingbird’s perspective, their interaction seems to be going quite well!
"The Northern Mockingbird enjoys making its presence known. It usually sits conspicuously on high vegetation, fences, eaves, or telephone wires, or runs and hops along the ground. Found alone or in pairs throughout the year, mockingbirds aggressively chase off intruders on their territory." - allaboutbirds.org
