We had a respite from the wildfire haze today, and I got to go and take some wonderful pictures of the lush marshes of the Salish sea. Featuring a northern harrier. #LandscapePhotography #MarshHawk #NorthernHarrier #BC #PNW #marshes #WildGrass

I missed the lead to this series (and should have had a faster shutter speed), so I am not sure if this is an unsuccessful attempt by a short eared owl to steal a meal from a northern harrier, or a successful attempt by a northern harrier to steal a meal from a short eared owl.
The falling grasses lead me to believe the harrier has stolen the meal, but it is not definitive.
Last weekend, I caught a Northern Harrier in flight. Though the view finder, I only knew it was some kind of raptor #NorthernHarrier #Birds #BirdPhotography #Fujifilm #CropToZoom #SacramentoWildlifeRefuge

Speaking of #Rewilding, some new signs went up at nearby #CaliforniaFields in Southern #Maine! Looks like the #MaineDepartmentOfInlandFisheries finally acknowledged that there are some #EndangeredSpecies there, and put the pressure on #BlueTriton / #PolandSprings / #BigWater -- who had planted a bunch of pine trees in the field (to hide the drilled wells that they claim are "springs"). But now they have to take them down and restore the grasslands! (And it's full of #Milkweed which the #MonarchButterflies love!)

A Northern Harrier! This one got some other birders I met on the sanctuary a bit confused, but a local volunteer explained: these are females, and most people are used to seeing the males, which have a blue-grey coloration.

Northern Harrier in Motion
I saw this Norhtern Harrier (Circus hudsonius) at Holly Beach, Louisiana in December 2022. I was using a Canon 90D, it is a good camera, but I've all but side lined it since then for better equipment. Now I use it for close up work, portraits and what not.
"The Northern Harrier is distinctive from a long distance away: a slim, long-tailed hawk gliding low over a marsh or grassland, holding its wings in a V-shape and sporting a white patch at the base of its tail. Up close it has an owlish face that helps it hear mice and voles beneath the vegetation. Each gray-and-white male may mate with several females, which are larger and brown. These unusual raptors have a broad distribution across North America." - allaboutbirds.org
