Pretty cool. I just got to watch the #NorthernFlicker #Woodpecker’s courtship dance!

Video gets better after about 15-20 seconds.

At first I only saw one of the birds & thought it was injured. Then the other kept so low I wondered if it was a young bird. Then it became pretty obvious that it was a mating ritual. Anyway, sorry for my voice over musings.

From my research last night I feel very confident in saying this is a male red-shafted Northern Flicker.

Also saw this family of northern flickers in our alley. I don't know why, especially since I'm not superstitious, but I always associate flickers with good luck.

A Flicker in Time

This an aged picture of a northern flicker (Colaptes auratus) who was around during the winter a few years ago.

"Northern Flickers are large, brown woodpeckers with a gentle expression and handsome black-scalloped plumage. On walks, don’t be surprised if you scare one up from the ground. It’s not where you’d expect to find a woodpecker, but flickers eat mainly ants and beetles, digging for them with their unusual, slightly curved bill. When they fly you’ll see a flash of color in the wings – yellow if you’re in the East, red if you’re in the West – and a bright white flash on the rump." - allaboutbirds.org
