🧵5/ For those interested in #NordicFolkMusic and #Ethnomusicology I wrote an essay in 2012 about the #Sami people of #Scandinavia and their traditions. The Sami are known for their closeness to nature, and their singing and music reflects that. This is kinda a rambling blog post - back when I was still enamored with YouTube and going nuts populating my playlists. I admit to being disappointed with all things Google of late, but I’ve put too much time & effort into my channel to abandon YT now. I’m not an expert, just an aficionado; please forgive any errors or omissions. This is it for this thread.

The Sami tribe, often reindeer herders in the far north of #Scandinavia, are the region’s native inhabitants. Their unique singing style, including the ‘Jojk’, is best (imo) exemplified by Sofia Jannok. 🧵1/ Imma shift gears this Saturday afternoon and put my #EthnoMusicology hat on. I’ve always loved #CelticMusic, the music of my ancestors. So seeking to better understand its origins I detoured into #NordicFolkMusic as Scandinavian #Vikings brought much of their culture, including music, to the Scotland, Ireland, England and Wales during their centuries long occupation & rule. I’ve discovered I love the sound of the Hardanger #Fiddle, the Nyckelharpa, the Hurdy-Gurdy and the Cittern. Sharing some of my favorite #MusicVideos from my YT channel (one of 19 playlists). This vid features Annbjørg Lien, the undisputed queen of the Hardanger fiddle, Norway’s most beloved folk instrument, accompanied by Roger Tallroth.

Personally, I find it virtually impossible to be depressed or down if there’s a banjo, mandolin and fiddle playing within earshot. Stereo stays on all day in our home. As I have good reason on occasion to entertain morbid thoughts, better than most, my self-care often involves liberal doses of upbeat #bluegrass as well as #Celtic and #NordicFolkMusic. You know, #music that makes your feet tap - breakdowns, jigs, reels, strathspeys and Nordic polska. 🎼
