Today a very interesting conversation about backing up data just made me think more about this subject and brought up these questions in regards of preservation data especially for artists. What do you think?
💿 How do others backup their digital data?
💿💿 Does the expected longevity influence your choice of medium (e.g. HDD, SDD, CD)?
💿💿💿 How long should the medium actually last - longer than your own lifespan?
📀 Before digital (and today), artists' works still lived on as there were actual physical creations like paintings, sculptures etc.. So how will society ensure this with digital art? Does society need or want to preserve digital created art for the future (not speaking of AI bs at this point)? How would this work and would it mean to keep "all" the data? Forever? And where? Would this mean, that we (in an idealistic world) would have finally stopped chopping down our forests for farming, mining and drilling, but started it again for fabricating space for massive server farms, which would be then necessary?
Personally, I am currently trying out different solutions to back up digital data but can’t say that I have found the ideal solution yet and also, I am not so sure, that someday in a distant future, if a being would accidentally discovered these storage devices, this individual would actually want to go through all that. – So, I guess it is not only a question of what kind of medium to choose in regards of structure, longevity and sustainability – maybe at first it is a question of whether one believes in the importance and value of its oeuvre for the world to come.

"... the main justification for using palm oil over other oil crops by palm oil lobbyists is: “Palm oil uses less land than other oil crops. Therefore, even though this crop is causing indigenous land-grabbing, ecocide, deforestation, fires, species extinction and causing air and water pollution – it’s still better than other oils” " #nopalmoil
