  1. Serverless computing is nothing new, but it's poised for major growth, according to recent market research. This week's #ITOps Query #vodcast guest has had a front-row seat to that growth both at Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Capital One, where he led the company's efforts to use serverless at scale and helped shape its Serverless Center of Excellence.

In this episode, Brian McNamara, distinguished engineer at Capital One, discusses the pros and cons of #serverlesscomputing for enterprises, recent advances in adjacent technologies such as #observability, and shares his lessons learned.

    In today’s episode, we’ll cover…

    · Cost and efficiency savings with serverless computing

    · AWS #CloudWatch, X-Ray and #OpenTelemetry updates for serverless observability

    · The "#NoOps" misnomer

    · How to help developers work with serverless functions effectively

    And more!

  6. The final #ITOps Query #vodcast episode of 2025 is kind of an interesting counterpoint to last week's conversation about cloud repatriation and bare metal. Paul Constantinides, EVP of engineering at Salesforce, who leads the company's #Hyperforce team, and I discussed why #Salesforce expanded its #publiccloud presence as it added #AI and #AIOps.

In today’s episode, we also cover…

    * Trust as a core value in infrastructure management at scale

    * How cloud-native principles improve resilience for AI applications

    * How internally developed AIOps tools perform automate incident remediation and response

    * The role for human engineers in a #NoOps future

    And more!

Programming note: We will be taking a holiday break the next two weeks, returning with new episodes Jan 8.

  9. Scratch that, spoke too soon. The final install also succeeded but now the box won’t reboot. So all was well until 20.04 and 20.04 → 22.04 borked it.

    Fun times.

Can’t even get an ssh shell in.

Meh, rebuild from scratch it is then, I guess.

    :awesome: 👍

  10. Just updated a server I hadn’t touched in over six years from Ubuntu 16.04 → 18.04 → 20.04 → 22.04 and it all went smoothly; not a single issue.

I can’t wait for a server with Fedora Silverblue-style upgrades (CoreOS?) that’s supported by the major VPS providers in default images. Tried a while back to get Hetzner to support CoreOS but the process appears somewhat stuck:

  11. We tried #NoOps, but it was not possible in reality. Not least because complex systems break in disorderly & unpredictable ways all the time.

But now AI has learned to code, which is by definition both orderly & predictable.

Seems NoDevs is way more likely than NoOps ever was.

  12. #Dynatrace's previously aggressive #NoOps vision hasn't come to fruition, but some users such as #Vivint, #Photobox and #BestBuy have begun to see real-world #AIOps results with root-cause analysis and automated rollbacks. #Perform2023 bit.ly/3lL5v9a

  13. From an engineering point-of-view, I'm really, really curious how a platform the size of Twitter continues to operate if really 50% of staff are more or less immediately laid off. Is enough automated that it will continue running? Is it auto-healing? Will things go haywire?

From a human point of view: it's horrible watching how the company's boss is treating people. People do matter.
