For certain #RadioactiveWaste dumped at sea and sunken #NuclearSubmarines, the impact of climate change and ocean #acidification on the release of radionuclides and their subsequent fate in the marine environment should be considered further. Fluxes from secondary sources of radionuclides in the marine and terrestrial environment and cryosphere will change in response to climate change impacts such as sea level rise, warming and changes in precipitation patterns. In addition, climate change impacts may increase the risk of releases of radionuclides from operational and legacy wastes on land to the marine environment. "Clean air and drinking water and healthy food are the very foundation of a just and livable world. They are already more precious than ever due to the climate crisis.
#NuclearPower and #NuclearWeapons are poisoning our water, air, and lands with vast amounts of #RadioactiveWaste. Much of the harm is inflicted on #Black, #Indigenous, #PeopleOfColor and #LowIncome white communities, due to #StructuralRacism and #injustice.
Radioactive waste poses a global #EnvironmentalCrisis, in tandem with #ClimateChange. The sheer amount of nuclear waste is enough to threaten clean drinking water and healthy food for the whole world.
We are on the frontlines of this problem.
- Nearly one-third of the worldwide total of radioactive waste is in the United States.
- Some communities in the US are already losing their drinking water sources to radioactive contamination.
- Just one part of the radioactive waste in the US – irradiated nuclear fuel – contains enough radioactivity to make every drop of drinking water on Earth unsafe to consume.We must solve the twin global crises of climate change and nuclear waste. Global warming amplifies the dangers of nuclear energy. Increasingly #SevereStorms, #flooding, #SeaLevelRise, #wildfires and other extreme events increase the risks of nuclear disasters and #RadioactiveLeaks and spills. And, in turn, the impacts of nuclear energy magnify the dangers of climate change:
- Poisoning drinking water and agricultural land on top of more frequent and severe droughts and crop failures.
- Compounding hurricane and flooding evacuations with #RadiologicalDisasters.
- And causing people to lose their homes and communities permanently due to radiation.It’s clear: we can’t afford the dangers of climate change or nuclear waste. And we certainly can’t afford them together.
The solutions to both are at hand. We must act now.
1. To start, we must stop the problems from worsening: no more greenhouse gas emissions, and no more nuclear waste.
2. We need to protect people and the water, air, and food we rely on from the dangers that are upon us. The climate is changing, and we need to protect people for extreme weather, drought, sea-level rise, and food supply disruptions. And we must safeguard our water, air, and land by securing and storing nuclear waste and toxic materials as safely as possible.
3. What Can We Learn From the Birth of the #NuclearEra?

August 3, 2025"In recent months, nuclear weapons have reemerged in global headlines. Nuclear-armed rivals #India and #Pakistan approached the brink of a full-scale war, a confrontation that could have become an extinction-level event, with the potential to claim up to 2 billion lives worldwide.
"The instability of a global order structured on nuclear apartheid has also come into sharp relief in the context of the recent attacks on #Iran by #Israel and the #UnitedStates. That system has entrenched a dangerous double standard, creating perverse incentives for the #proliferation of world-destroying weaponry, already possessed by nine countries. Many of those nations use their arsenals to exercise imperial impunity, while non-nuclear states increasingly feel compelled to pursue nuclear weapons in the name of national security and survival.
"Meanwhile, the largest nuclear powers show not the slightest signs of responsibility or restraint. The United States, #Russia, and #China are investing heavily in the 'modernization' and expansion of their arsenals, fueling a renewed arms race. And that escalation comes amid growing global instability contributing to a Manichean world of antagonistic armed blocs, reminiscent of the #ColdWar at its worst.
"The nuclear threat endangers not only global peace and security but the very continuity of the human species, not to speak of the simple survival of life on Earth. How, you might wonder, could we ever have arrived at such a precarious situation?
"The current crisis coincides with the 80th anniversary of the #TrinityTest, the first detonation of an atomic weapon that would soon obliterate the Japanese cities of #Hiroshima and #Nagasaki and so inaugurate the #AtomicAge. So many years later, it’s worth critically reassessing the decisions that conferred on humanity such a power of self-annihilation. After all, we continue to live with the fallout of the choices made (and not made), including those of the scientists who created the bomb. That history also serves as a reminder that alternative paths were available then and that another world remains possible today."

"When the fires showed no sign of slowing, #Pantex Plant officials urgently called on local contractors, who arrived within minutes with bulldozers to dig trenches and enlarge fire breaks for the sprawling complex where nuclear weapons are assembled and disassembled and dangerous plutonium pits — hollow spheres that trigger nuclear warheads and bombs — are stored.
" 'The winds can pick up really (quickly) here and can move really fast,' said Jason Armstrong, the federal field office manager at Pantex, outside Amarillo, who was awake 40 hours straight monitoring the risks. Workers were sent home and the plant shut down when smoke began blanketing the site.
"Those fires in February — including the largest in Texas history — didn’t reach Pantex, though flames came within 3 miles (5 kilometers). And Armstrong says it’s highly unlikely that plutonium pits, stored in fire-resistant drums and shelters, would have been affected by wildfire.
"But the size and speed of the grassland fires, and Pantex’s urgent response, underscore how much is at stake as climate change stokes extreme heat and drought, longer fire seasons with larger, more intense blazes and supercharged rainstorms that can lead to catastrophic flooding. The Texas fire season often starts in February, but farther west it has yet to ramp up, and is usually worst in summer and fall."

There are two trucks now each weekday, traveling at high rates of speed, each carrying 24 tons of radioactive matter that is only covered with tie-down tarps from the Grand Canyon to the #UraniumMill in Utah.
"Havsuw' Baaja, Havasupai, are Guardians of the #GrandCanyon and have opposed #UraniumMining since time immemorial to protect their land and water for future generations, the Havasupai Tribe said today.
"We are deeply disappointed in #EnergyFuels Resources, Inc., and the Navajo Nation for not including us in their discussions that ultimately led to the dangerous decision to allow hauling of radioactive material across our aboriginal lands," the Havasupai Tribe said.
"The Navajo Tribe is not the only tribe or community affected by this activity."

TUBA CITY -- "#LeonaMorgan, Dine' co-founder of #HaulNo!, said the Navajo Nation is now "back peddling" by allowing radioactive uranium waste to be transported through Dine' communities. This radioactive transport from the #GrandCanyon means even more deadly waste for another Native community -- the #WhiteMesaUte community in #Utah.
"Now, with little or no information along the haul route, the Navajo government expects the Dine' Chapters on the route to each have an emergency preparedness plan. Leona asked if the Dine' communities are aware of this and whether the Navajo Chapters are certified to deal with radioactive emergencies.
"'Who are their First Responders?' Ultimately, Dine' will have to confront the Navajo President and the Navajo Department of Justice, she said.
'We were not included in that agreement,' Leona said of the agreement between the Navajo Nation and #Energy Fuels."'There was no free, prior and informed consent,' Leona said, quoting the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples [#UNDRIP]. 'The people in the communities were not consulted.'
"'How can they start transporting on February 12th, when there aren't even any checkpoints? We don't even have an #AirMonitoring system,' Leona said of the lack of preparation for radioactive
transport on the Navajo Nation.
Energy Fuels plans to pass through Navajo communities with six to ten trucks of radioactive waste,

PHOENIX— "Local and national public-interest groups, as well as #Havasupai Tribe members, delivered more than 17,000 petition signatures to Gov. Katie Hobbs today urging her to use her authority to close the Pinyon Plain uranium mine that threatens the waters of the #GrandCanyon and the Havasupai Tribe.
"This comes after the groups, scientists and many others sent a letter to the governor in January outlining the threats posed by this mine and asking for her assistance with its closure.
"'The Havasupai Tribe, other Tribal leaders, and those who care about protecting Grand Canyon and its waters have fought the Pinyon Plain uranium mine for decades because it threatens the waters of Grand Canyon and the Havasupai,' said Sandy Bahr, director for #SierraClub’s Grand Canyon (Arizona) Chapter. 'Gov. Hobbs can and should help shut down this mine as once the mine contaminates the groundwater, there is no way to clean it up. The best way to protect Grand Canyon and the people who depend on its waters is to move forward with closure of this mine.'
"The Pinyon Plain mine, which began extracting uranium ore on Jan. 8, [2024] is seven miles south of Grand Canyon National Park and inside the newly designated Baaj Nwaavjo I’tah Kukveni – Ancestral Footprints of the Grand Canyon National Monument. Although President Biden’s national monument designation permanently bans new mining claims and development inside the monument, it exempts preexisting claims with valid existing rights like the Pinyon Plain uranium mine.
"'Neither industry nor regulators can guarantee that the Pinyon Plain uranium mine won’t irretrievably damage aquifers that feed Grand Canyon’s precious springs,' said Taylor McKinnon, Southwest director at the Center for Biological Diversity. 'That’s not a risk worth taking. At the Center we stand with the Havasupai Tribe asking Gov. Hobbs to close the mine now.'
"The petitions delivered to the governor by groups including the Sierra Club, Center for Biological Diversity, National Parks Conservation Association, #WildArizona, #ChispaArizona, and #HaulNo!, along with Tribal members, request that she 'do everything [she] can to help protect the waters of Grand Canyon, the new national monument, and these waters that are essential to the existence of the Havasupai people. "Over three quarters of the brands included in our ethical current accounts guide lost half a mark under Arms & Military supply for their investments. This included all the five major high street banks: #Barclays, #HSBC, #Lloyds, #NatWest and #Santander.

Also, many submunitions fail to explode on impact: they remain on the ground like landmines that kill and injure civilians long after the conflict has ended.'

"Yet, in 2018, the Cluster Munition Coalition found that financial institutions had invested almost $9 billion in companies producing cluster munitions. Citigroup and Old Mutual were both found to invest in companies involved.
"Amongst the banks named in the report, Triodos, Co-operative Bank and Royal Bank of Scotland were all praised for having divestment policies in place.
"However, Aviva, Axa, Deutsche Bank, Edentree Investment Management, HSBC, Lloyds Banking Group, Bank of Scotland and Standard Chartered were all found to have incomplete policies in place."

"The Syndicate of Chemists in Lebanon (#SCL) warned yesterday that the extent of destruction and the depth of damage to buildings and the ground confirms the use of internationally banned bombs containing #DepletedUranium by #Israeli forces, warning of the risk of contracting many diseases as a result of inhaling the [#radioactive] dust caused by the bombing.
"It said in a 'very important warning” that it condemns “the barbaric aggression against civilians in Lebanon and the massacres being committed against the Lebanese people,' noting that the warning aims 'to raise awareness about the effects of inhaling the dust from Israeli bombings in several Lebanese areas.'
"'The extent of destruction and the penetration of buildings and ground by dozens of metres is evidence of the use of #bombs containing depleted #uranium, which has tremendous penetrating power,' it added.

In every family, there was cancer. In every family, someone was dying of #cancer, or had already died, from cancer because of the uranium mining.

"Dozens of active and idle laboratories and manufacturing and #military facilities across the nation that use, store or are contaminated with radioactive material are increasingly vulnerable to #ExtremeWeather. Many also perform critical energy and defense research and manufacturing that could be disrupted or crippled by fires, floods and other disasters.
"There’s the 40-square-mile #LosAlamos National Laboratory in #NewMexico, where a 2000 wildfire burned to within a half mile (0.8 kilometers) of a #RadioactiveWaste site. The heavily polluted #SantaSusana Field Laboratory [#SSFL] in Southern #California, where a 2018 wildfire burned 80% of the site, narrowly missing an area #contaminated by a 1959 partial #NuclearMeltdown. And the #plutonium-contaminated #Hanford nuclear site in #Washington, where the U.S. manufactured #AtomicBombs.
"'I think we’re still early in recognizing climate change and ... how to deal with these extreme weather events,' said Paul Walker, program director at the environmental organization Green Cross International and a former staff member of the House Armed Services Committee. 'I think it’s too early to assume that we’ve got all the worst-case scenarios resolved ... (because) what might have been safe 25 years ago probably is no longer safe.”
