Companies Knew the Dangers of PFAS 'Forever Chemicals'—and Kept Them Secret

Jun 1, 2023 4:22 PM ET"#C8 is today defined as two chemicals—#PFOA and #PFOS—that are part of a class of more than 12,000 substances known collectively as #PFAS, short for per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances. Also known as '#ForeverChemicals' because that’s pretty much how long they linger in the environment, PFAS are used in thousands of products from textiles to #nonstick pans to #cosmetics to FireFightingFoam to #FoodPackaging, and more. The chemicals have been linked to a host of physical ills, including decreased fertility, high blood pressure in pregnant people, increased risk of certain cancers, developmental delays and low birthweight in children, hormonal disruption, high cholesterol, and reduced effectiveness of the immune system."

We’re likely underestimating the future impact of PFAS in the environment, a new UNSW Sydney-led study shows.

April 8, 2024"Per-and poly-fluoroalkyl substances – commonly known as PFAS – are a group of over 14,000 human-made chemicals that have been popular since the 1950s for their diverse uses in resisting heat, water, grease and stains.
"They’ve been commonly found in household products like #nonStick frying pans, clothing, cosmetics, insecticides, and food packaging, as well as specialty industry products, like #FirefightingFoam.
"But despite their broad skillset, the chemicals have a dark side: they’re known as ‘forever chemicals’ because once they’re in the environment – or our bodies – they don’t degrade further.
"PFAS have been linked to environmental and health issues, including some #cancers, but a lot remains unknown about the true scale and potential impacts of the problem – including how much is in our water supply.
"A new UNSW-led international study, published today in Nature Geoscience, assessed the levels of PFAS contamination in surface and ground water around the globe.
"It found that much of our global source water exceeds PFAS safe drinking limits.
"'Many of our source waters are above PFAS regulatory limits,' says senior author of the study, UNSW Engineering Professor Denis O’Carroll.
"'We already knew that PFAS is pervasive in the environment, but I was surprised to find out the large fraction of source waters that are above drinking water advisory recommendations,' he says.
"'We're talking above 5 per cent, and it goes over 50 per cent in some cases.'"

I mean, it's in the RAIN! Kinda hard to avoid rainwater -- especially if you live in nature and don't have water filters. smh

January 19, 2024"One of the most tragic and mystifying conditions a human being can experience is childhood leukemia. This potentially deadly cancer occurs at an incredibly young age before the patient has even been exposed to most of the risk factors usually associated with cancer.
"However, Environmental Health News (EHN) reports that a recent large study published in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute links childhood leukemia to a frighteningly common type of chemical: PFAS.
"PFAS (#perfluoroalkyl and #polyfluoroalkyl substances), also known as 'forever chemicals,' are a class of chemicals used in as many as 88% of #HouseholdProducts, especially those with #nonstick, #StainResistant, and #WaterResistant treatments. They’re called forever chemicals because they take an astronomically long time to break down, building up in the #environment instead as more are released.

Why am I still seeing #nonstick pans in modern YouTube cooking videos? You'd think that people who make a living from putting food into their mouths would make sure their most important tools weren't coated with toxic forever chemicals. If the pan isn't cast iron, carbon steel, graniteware, or coated in ceramic then it's coated in #PFAS

"PFAS chemicals have recently been at the heart of health and environmental issues in Hoosick Falls, Petersburgh and other areas around the state, leading to legal action, tougher regulations and cleanup efforts.
"The chemicals have been linked to a variety of health issues, including kidney and testicular cancer, thyroid disease, colitis and high blood pressure.
"In most cases, the environmental contamination comes from the discharge of the compounds into the soil from manufacturers of products that use PFAS chemicals, such as #nonStick cooking material, #firefighting foam and stain-resistant #carpet.
"But those same dangerous chemicals may also be finding their way in greater amounts into our #soil, #groundwater and even #FoodSupply through their use in #fertilizers made from #sewage #sludge.
"It’s imperative that [#NewYorkState] do all it can to reduce PFAS chemicals into the environment, not add to them.
"That’s why groups like the #SierraClub and the Northeast Organic Farming Association of New York are among those concerned about an element of the state Department of Environmental Conservation’s draft Solid Waste Management plan that could nearly triple the amount of recycled sewage sludge used in fertilizer and applied to #farmland and home #gardens.
"According to an article in the Altamont Enterprise, the DEC projects that 425,585 tons of sewage sludge is expected to be recycled this year. In 2018, the amount recycled was just over 300,000 tons. By 2050, the amount of recycled sludge is expected to rise to 782,527 tons, the newspaper reported.
"The potential for that sludge to contain PFAS chemicals means that there could be an increase in PFAS’s making their way into the environment.
"DEC officials said they recognize the potential for PFAS chemicals to re-enter the environment through sludge and they’re taking steps to address it, including proposing sampling requirements for so-called biosolids recycled in New York state, a comprehensive risk assessment to determine a limit for biosolids recycling, and efforts to identify potential commercial and industrial sources of PFAS chemicals in biosolids.
"The public really needs to keep an eye on this effort to ensure that the state is doing all it can to avoid contributing to more of these chemicals entering the environment."
