Finished reading. Great coverage of freethought from late 18th to early 20th century.
Interesting to see some cyclical history. Hoffman describes an antiscriptural emphasis to the Paine era & social reform emphasis in the Robert Owen era, which prefigures a similar difference in 20th/21st century freethought between skeptical debunking and social justice emphases.

Reading David C. Hoffman's American Freethought (2025) and saw the National Liberal League's 1880 presidential platform, including this plank:
"Universal education the basis of universal suffrage in this secular republic."
As true now as it was then.

Our study on community gardens is out! We interviewed gardeners in Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, England, Finland, Norway, Northern Ireland, and the US. In our chapter with Giovanna Paccillo, Lauren Strumos and Rebecca Banham, we explore gardens as illustrations of everyday utopias: spaces and practices of being otherwise that entail critical function concerning the present moment.

I am happy to share that our project "RELIGION, MEANING AND MASCULINITIES", led by professor Kati Tervo-Niemelä, just received a four-year reseach grant from the Research Council of Finland. The project explores what religion means to men and how the role of religion is changing among men in finland. My part of the project looks at the intersections of religion and nonreligion.

56% say they believe in “some higher power” aside from the #God of the #Bible; 67% say they believe that #humans have a #soul or #spirit, & majorities say they believe that #nonhuman #animals & parts of #nature can have #spiritual energies.
The Pew findings seem to debunk, or at least complicate, the idea that people who leave religion are hostile toward it. -
The report, from #Pew Research Center, is one of the biggest yet on the nones, & it adds detail to this constituency that has been growing across a wide variety of demographic categories, including #age, #race, #political leaning & #education level. As the nation’s fastest-growing segment of #religion (or #nonreligion) in recent decades, the nones may reflect the front line of future #spirituality.
