  2. Last evening in #Berlin, I found a #beetle on my bicycle, a #scarab, which I thought is #nonnative. Rightly so, as #Mimela #junii is a #neozoan in Central Europe, native mainly to southern France/north Italy,. Adults feed on leaves, larvae on roots/decaying material in sandy soil. Thomaes, A. et al. (2022) demonstrate, using Belgium, that it's spread to Central/WesternEurope was likely due to #humantransport. #globalwarming.

  7. Edges of Hobler Park

Hobler Park’s quiet edges tell a story—of teasel, tangled growth, and wild resilience reclaiming forgotten ground.

  8. If it weren't for the fact that american mink are a non-native invasive species destroying the local wildlife, I'd find them rather elegant and fuzzy...

First time of seeing one in the wild myself. Impressed at just how close we got (about 15' across a water channel).

  9. There is no doubt that teaching in a second (third…) language uses unexplored parts of my brain! 🧠 It really gives me insight into the fatigue faced by so many of my non-native-speaker colleagues face each & every day in scientific conferences or teaching. Those moments when I set off on odd paraphrases because of the one crucial missing word…. #languages #teaching #nonnative speaker

  10. Time to show my #eBike a little love.
This time of year the #nonNative #goatHeadThistle, Tribulus terrestris, is going to seed.
I had over a dozen in the front tire, with the heads worn down. I had to use an x-knife to fish them out. I did stop as soon as I heard the change in tire sound and pulled as many as I saw but some were broken off already.

  11. CW: Plant - Carrion Flower with fly. Looks flesh-like.

  17. Tatsuya Amano and colleagues surveyed nearly a thousand environmental researchers from different countries and compared the amount of effort they put into conducting their research in English:

    :doi: doi.org/10.1371/journal.pbio.3

As expected, it turned out that non-native English speakers, especially at the beginning of their careers, spend significantly more effort than native English speakers.

  24. National Public Radio aired a segment on July 3rd that implied blueberries are completely reliant on Western honey bees. That is false. Blueberries are native to North America and are pollinated quite well, thank you, by native bumble bees and solitary bees. And growers who pack their fields with hives of (non-native) Western honey bees likely contribute to the decline of these indigenous pollinators. #HoneyBee #ApisMellifera #IntroducedSpecies #NonNative #BeeKeeping #bees #blueberry #vaccinium #pollination #npr #entomology #bees

  29. gifted @washingtonpost article about the importance of #nativePlants in the #homeGarden - or at least, the importance of getting rid of #invasives and leaving the #nonNative #nonInvasives as "decorations". And yes, minimizing "#lawn" to encourage #nativeSpecies to flourish.
