The Hidden Risk Nobody Puts on the Balance Sheet

Hi If this stat doesn't interest you, consider the questions raised about your future career in this article. Chief operating officers now last just three years in role on average. Chief financial officers, under four. Even the CEO chair, the seat most people assume is the most secure in the building, has compressed to 7.1 years. None of this is really about the top job. It is about how fast every senior seat is turning over now, and how little of that turnover has to do with the person in the seat doing anything wrong. There is a second risk that gets even less attention, and I think it matters more: building an entire professional reputation inside one organisation. Board appointments, advisory work, and consulting engagements are rarely won through an internal performance review. They are won through reputation built outside the walls of your current employer. I explore this through my own experience, from a single board role I took in 2016 to strengthen my executive career, to the network and reputation that grew from it well beyond that.
