I just watched #Hamnet (2025) at my local #AMC.
Hamnet is an emotionally powerful movie which suggests that #Shakespeare was inspired to write #Hamlet in memory of his son who died 4 years earlier. There is no proof that this is actually the case but it is a inventive twist on the story of his relationship with his wife, how they may have dealt with the death of their son & how it may have affected their relationship.
Hamnet was directed by #ChloeZhao. Zhao previously directed #Nomadland (2020) which won Oscars for Best Picture, Best Director (Zhao) & Best Actress (Frances McDormand) in 2021
Hamnet is nominated for 8 Oscars in 2026 for Best Picture, Best Director (Zhao), Best Actress (#JessieBuckley), Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Casting, Best Original Score, Best Costume Design & Best Production Design.
I don't normally like performances of Shakespeare's plays (I find it hard to understand the language) but I enjoyed those parts of Hamlet performed in this movie. I'd rate it 7 out of 10.

"Nomadland" (2020) depicts a live of Fern, a Usonian woman living a nomadic live: she's movie in her van adjusted to living through the U.S., catching seasonal jobs, from Amazon during the Christmas frenzy, to beet root plant. The movie feels like a half-documentary, and for a good reason: nomads that Fern meets in her journey are real people playing themselves. It starts with a premise of a downer, but ends up to be a very heartwarming and touching story. Plus marvellous landscapes.

@reimamak Näin elokuvan ensimmäistä kertaa teini-ikäisenä koulun elokuvakerhossa. Kuvisope vaihtoi keloja auditoriossa. Toisenlaista dialogia on Yleareenan #Nomadland -leffassa. Eniten huvitti amerikkalaisittain erittäin tyly päähenkilö ja se kun mies auttaa pyytämättä ja selittää tupakanpoltosta. Kova yritys ja ihan pieleen 😆

Η Μίλντρεντ (Frances McDormand) είχε μια κόρη η οποία βιάστηκε και δολοφονήθηκε αλλά ο δράστης δε βρέθηκε ποτέ. Η ίδια πεπεισμένη ότι η αστυνομία απλά έχει πετάξει την υπόθεση στα αζήτητα αναλαμβάνει να τη φέρει ξανά στο προσκήνιο με έναν πρωτότυπο τρόπο που θα αναταράξει τη μικρή πόλη, θα θορυβήσει τον τοπικό αστυνομικό διευθυντή (Woody Harrelson) και θα πυροδοτήσει αρκετά συντηρητικά "αντανακλαστικά" από διάφορες κατευθύνσεις.
Από εκείνη τη στιγμή και ύστερα η Μίλντρεντ βρίσκεται στο στόχαστρο του τοπικού αστυνομικού τμήματος.
Αν και στο δεύτερο μισό της η ταινία ρέπει προς την αμερικανιά, κάπως το ψιλοσώζει και συνολικά είναι μια πολυ ωραία ταινία στην οποία θα βρείτε αρκετές ομοιότητες με τη δική μας επικαιρότητα.
Υ.Γ. ωραίος ρόλος για την Frances McDormand, την οποία επίσης αξίζει να τη δείτε και στο #Nomadland (2020)

The reality of #Nomadland?
Given its status as the 'richest country in the world' you can't help but wonder how US can accept such levels of #homelessness & insecurity.... or then again, perhaps this was always going to be the case in a country run by rich people for rich people?
I've always said #America combines great civilisation with absolute barbarity - here they are combined... the barbarity of people forced out of homes & the civilised charitable response!

I'm following up #Nomadland with Whose Names Are Unknown, which follows an Oklahoma family displaced to California by the Dust Bowl. The depths of material poverty described in the 1930s is very different, but some things feel eerily similar to descriptions of the modern nomads.
"They aren't broken and docile but they don't complain...They all want work and hate to have help."

I went from reading #Oppenheimer's biography to #Nomadland -- about poor itinerant older folks in the US who live in their cars -- and somehow they both feel relatable.

H ταινία τοποθετείται κάπου στο 2011 στις ΗΠΑ εν μέσω οικονομικής κρίσης.
Μια 60χρονη βρίσκεται στο δρόμο γιατί το εργοστάσιο στο οποίο δούλευε έκλεισε και οι εργατικές κατοικίες στις οποίες διέμεναν ερήμωσαν. Για να συντηρήσει τον εαυτό της αναγκάζεται να κοιμάται στο βανάκι της και να βρίσκει περιστασιακές δουλειές (μεταξύ άλλων και στην #amazon) καταλήγοντας να κάνει νομαδική ζωή. Στο δρόμο συναντά δεκάδες ανθρώπους που για διάφορους λόγους έχουν καταλήξει σε παρόμοιο ή και χειρότερο σημείο.

Ωραία οπτική για τη σύγχρονη Αμερική από την Κινέζα σκηνοθέτιδα Κλόι Τζάο, γεννημένη στο Πεκίνο, σπουδαγμένη στη Νέα Υόρκη και εγκατεστημένη πλέον στις ΗΠΑ.

@rakyat This is ironic given that EEAAO isn't even being screened in China. And Nomadland, the Oscar-winning film of Chloé Zhao, who is actually from Beijing, is banned in the PRC.
