In early Buddhism, the rainy season/retreat (vassa), which began after the last full moon, was the only time monks/nuns lived indoors, and 'indoors' meant temporary wooden, thatch-roofed huts setup in pleasure gardens donated by wealthy laypeople, not stone viharas. They were expected to wander the rest of the year.

Thirty-six years ago, I made a choice that many are facing for the first time.

I stepped out of the corporate world to bet on a home office, emerging trends, and a belief in myself. Seven years later, I began writing about this shift as a major trend, identifying the rise of “nomadic workers” — people we now call members of the freelance economy. In 1997, I published articles and a book (never completed) outlining the vanguard of a new economy where the traditional “job-for-life” was being replaced by a portfolio of skills and a freelance attitude.

Through 44 books and thousands of keynotes, I have chased many things: innovation, market trends, and technological velocity. But looking back from Year 36, the most successful pivot I ever made wasn’t financial or professional.

It was the pivot toward focusing on my family.

In this high-speed global economy, it is easy to become a slave to the “next big thing.” It’s easy to chase the never-ending quest for career success. It’s easy to lose yourself in all the opportunities that are swirling around you.

But the reality of a meaningful life is that the greatest ROI is always time. You will never look back and regret the hours you invested in your family instead of the greater career success you might have had.

To make my freelance voyage of nearly four decades work, I had to be disciplined. Over time, I developed a set of “10 Rules for Working at Home” to protect that time, and wrote them into a post in 2002. My favorite is Rule #10: “Remember why you are doing this. You’re working at home to be with your family. Don’t let the work get in the way of that!”

I remember a crucial call years ago where my two-year-old son came running into the office screaming because he’d banged his finger. I was frantic, trying to maintain my “professional” corporate persona. The woman on the other end just laughed — she was working from home too. In that moment, the “nomadic worker” reality hit home: the “interruption” isn’t a bug in the system; it’s the primary feature.

If you are navigating the freelance economy today, don’t hide the chaos.

Embrace it.

Make it a part of your voyage.

Design a career that flexes around life, not a life that shatters when work gets busy.

A lot of my purpose with this account has been about letting go of my past pains, embracing change and sharing some example for moving forward as I personally keep noticing healing & connection with nature. Exploring, what can we learn from that? Feeling an end of this era, a new chapter to create. Im changing my lifestyle to some degree, a place Ive come to know. This feels strange to admit but this little box on wheels has been more of my home than anywhere else Ive lived these past five years. Ive worked many seasonal & remote jobs to create time for a nomadic lifestyle. I took a minimalist approach; recognizing & experimentally embracing you can do more with less. Slowly discovering many cross over philosophies with technology enthusiasts who love to embrace terms like FOSS, Libre, FLO and others alike. Pondering if many in technology fields seem to share similar views & values with ski bums, dirtbags and nomads? Ive met so many incredible people along the way and experiencing how healing it is when we genuinely connect. 

The change for me now is of great importance to reflect. To follow through on realizing the healing wouldn't be complete without helping more people ahead. The silence was good, the isolation had peace but the final words of Chris McCandless still strike me deep: "Happiness is only real, when shared." Nothing lasts forever but letting go does feel uncomfortable. Setting my own intention for a mountain mindset based around sharing an appreciation, a love & respect for the land & people. I might have taken a simple approach to experiencing a complex world. And if theres anything Id still like to learn... is it better in life to ask questions than to give answers?

The other thing that the #Guppe incident showed us is that the #Fediverse seriously needs the #Nomadic protocol.

Let's say the Fediverse understands the protocol: just move to a new domain, inform all instances "this is the new domain, automatically re-subscribe please", done. Life goes on for regular people.

I am not saying it is that easy or that's how exactly it will work. But it could've been avoided. Right now, entire communities are gone, many who were relying on it are now disconnected. (Then again, I can argue that it's time to clean the membership since many accounts are also stagnant.)
