Anyone else totally enchanted by Netflix’s many Asian drama series? I confess to being somewhat addicted, both to the period dramas and the modern rom-coms. I do enjoy series that center around food & food prep, and there are plenty of those - Korean and Japanese. The epic Chinese dramas are some of the best shows on the platform imo. So well made, often perfect in every way. I’ve tired of Hollywood offerings, so formulaic and predictable. And though I enjoy some #Bollywood films, the format was created for South Asian audiences and sometimes does not fit my sensibilities. I’ve tried #Nollywood movies, and I admire the Nigerian film industry, but it is not yet as mature as it could be imo. Lots of talent there, however, so it is only a matter of time. The popular actor, known for his deadpan comedy style, admitted that his journey to stardom began with significant personal struggles.
In the interview published on January 8, 2026, Donga described himself as a “church boy” who masked his pain with silence.
Childhood Shyness And Romance
The comedian explained that his reserved nature severely impacted his social life during his formative years.
He told Chude that he lacked the confidence to approach women and only built his first romantic connection after entering university.
Donga noted that he eventually developed a “casual friendship” based on shared interests rather than using “pick-up lines.”
This revelation adds another layer to the host’s portfolio of deep conversations, as Chude Jideonwo opens up on why he never dates women who ask for money in his own candid reflections.
The “Depressing” Academic Failure
Donga recalled a pivotal moment when he failed his university entrance exams by a single grade.
His father, a retired school principal and strict disciplinarian, refused to use his influence to help his son secure admission.
The actor quoted his father’s harsh ultimatum: “It is either you enter university by merit or else you are going to repeat every exam you fail.”
This refusal forced Donga to retake the exams, a period he described as his “first blow in life” that led to a bout of depression.
The Cost Of Silence
The content creator admitted that he kept his academic struggles to himself instead of seeking help.
He later discovered that a lecturer in his circle could have legally assisted him if he had spoken up earlier.
This realization taught him that “when you keep quiet, your misery keeps quiet with you.”
Such early career hurdles are common among top Nigerian creatives, much like how Layi Wasabi reveals Davido’s secret support before stardom changed his trajectory.
Breaking Industry Stereotypes
Donga also touched on the challenge of being typecast as the “clueless job seeker” character that made him famous.
He initially embraced the role to make people happy but eventually felt the need to prove his versatility.
The actor cited the movie Hakkunde as a career-defining project that allowed him to break free from the comedy stereotype.
