Evidently we have a new age verification law in California that even applies to open source operating systems including Linux.
What if we just build age verification into ALL machinery while were at it? Cars, bicycles, theatres, alcohol isle in the grocery store, tool isle at Home Depot. Cameras with retina scans.
We're about to accept DRM into every aspect of our lifes.
Our society has lost all objectivity. We deserve to be ruled by Ai.

So my audioengine HD5s arrived yesterday. Pretty exciting. So of course I'm listening to my music all day today while I work.
GrapheneOS handles the audio specifics just fine. No fancy protocols, just pair and play.
Sound quality is excellent, and...

The last two Apple products we use in our house are two HomePods, and an AppleTV.
I'm replacing the HomePods with two audioengine HD5 speakers. Not huge speakers, but we have humble needs.
I really look forward to just syncing audio via Bluetooth, with no "smart" features, and...

My music collection only has DRM-free music in it. My first goto for new music is always #Bandcamp. If it's not there, then #Qobuz, which has improved a lot but costs more. Both offer high quality FLAC downloads. Then it's hard to find music on #Cds, usually from local stores.
I don't purchase mp3, and I will never rent (to never own), my music.
I plan to listen to my music collection until I'm six feet under using my Jellyfin Server.

To me, this proposed "solution" is about as distressing as DRM itself. Yes, I think it would be great to keep things out of the hands of evil AI and the companies supporting it, but... Is yet another walled garden the solution? As a reader, I would never use something like that. Sorry.

Bugger. I bought an eBook from bookshop.org as a present for @bright_helpings
I knew it would have #DRM, but I managed to get the ePub file downloaded in the Android app, extracted to my laptop where I intended to use #Calibre and the #NoDRM plugin.
Annoyingly the particular kind of DRM got a DMCA takedown a while back, and there doesn't seem to be a good way to strip it in any other way.
So yeah, don't fall for the "it's OK to buy DRM stuff, you can always strip it later" approach.

I've been looking for a replacement for Youtube Music as part of my ongoing quest to de-Google my life, and I think I've finally found one. I'm evaluating Qobuz and so far it seems nice.
It does not seem to be related to any of the top four players (Spotify, Apple, Google, or Amazon) so that's a definite plus.
Anyone else using Qobuz? I'd love to hear your thoughts.

This is about a platform mandating DRM, to control/manipulate revenue streams.
I think Google (and Apple) are fully capable to manage platform security without gatekeeping access to our devices. They could improve OS immutability, or better admin rights without root privileges.
As irritating as they can be, even the banks have developed secure financial platforms that still allow us to purchase WHAT we want, from WHO we want.
