Read about astronauts, ne'er-do-wells, business trousers, and other things in Chapter 7 of my ongoing serialized memoir.
In this one I write mostly about Nodes of Yesod, Odin Computer Graphics, and 1980s Liverpool.

My project to polish, augment, and publish the disassembly of the 1985 game Nodes of Yesod using generative AI models continues and is going quite well. I am going to quickly skip over the 1 day of lost work when Claude decided to revert a change by overwriting a file (my Wiggum loop has a Git in it now), and instead just briefly mention a side quest I sent Gemini on, and that is to make me a web page to render the graphics blocks from the game. Well, that worked the first time, and you can see the results in the first image. It's just a static web page, but the fascinating thing (for me, at least) is that Gemini created it by analyzing the Z80 code flow and embedded data bytes in the game disassembly. I didn't extract the graphics in any external way. Anyway, that worked so well that I then asked Gemini to make a room renderer, in JavaScript, again based on its understanding of how the Z80 code renders the rooms. That can be seen in the second image - it's a web page with embedded JavaScript. Cursor keys navigate the map. Gemini struggled a bit more with this, but eventually, after some interactive prompting, it got it right, and I had Gemini create an .md file capturing its current state of understanding of that area of the code.
I've also had Gemini sketch out a plan for an NES port of the game. It'd be interesting to see how it handles the Z80-to-6502 conversion.
I tell you, we're on a wild frontier with this stuff.

I've listed a one-of-a-kind LEGO mosaic featuring Astro Charlie from Nodes of Yesod on eBay. The mosaic is 24x24" and would look great in a game room, office, or den.
This is one of a small number of prototypes I created while testing various configurations of LEGO pixel art mosaics. As such, it is pretty unique and has a direct connection to the creator of the original game (me!)

Holy cow, I must have had some energy around the 2012 timeframe! I found I had not one but two versions of Nodes built from entirely different codebases, for Android! I’ll attach videos in replies since I can’t attach more than 1 here. The first one below is built in Flash using the Flashbuilder tool from Adobe, which could target native device builds. The second one is a ‘native’ (Java) Android build. Neither one was released (and neither is finished, but both are playable). I was planning to sell this device on eBay in an early spring cleaning purge, wonder if there’d be any interest if I’ll sell it with this ‘RARE’ unreleased software installed. #RARE #RetroGaming #NodesOfYesod #Android #Flash #FlashBuilder #Java (1/3)

The never-released version of Nodes of Yesod I made for Android. Going through some old stuff, I found this Samsung Galaxy Player with a version of Nodes installed. I kinda forgot I made this. Excuse the dusty screen. :) #RetroGaming #Android #NodesOfYesod #GamesThatWereNot

The Spectrum from Retro Games Ltd is actually pretty good! It comes with USB power and HDMI cord, and the rubber keyboard works great for playing games. Nodes of Yesod and Robin of the Wood are bundled, both play well. #RetroGames #TheSpectrum #ZXSpectrum #NodesOfYesod #RobinOfTheWood

Timelapse of Lego tile rendering of Astro Charlie. Mixed results with the Mastodon embed, here's a YouTube embed, let's see how bad this one is.
Each time I watch this I panic that I am not going to finish before the music ends, lol. :)

Astro Charlie from Nodes of Yesod in Lego™️ tiles. I made a timelapse but need to edit, will post. Yes, I am off by 1 pixel in X and Y because apparently I can’t count. #zxspectrum #8bit #pixelart #lego #astrocharlie #nodesofyesod

Today's #retrogaming on the #Commodore64 #C64 #NodesOfYesod. It's a collect the objects game that reminds me a little of Underwurlde. Don't forget you have a mole to tunnel through walls and the music is rather nice as well. I can lose lots of time to this game.

Another blast from the past. The 25th anniversary edition of Nodes of Yesod for iPhone & iPad from 2010. This one is Objective C++ and OpenGL, banished from the App Store for its lack of 64 bit-ness, but running here on an old iPad. Note the ‘classic’ & ‘enhanced’ modes. I did complete a 64 bit update of this, and even localized to French/German/Spanish, but then a job move and inertia set in. That was 6 years ago now. #RetroGames #ZXSpectrum #iOS #iPhone #iPad #NodesOfYesod

Timelapsed construction of Astro Charlie from the 8-bit Spectrum/C64/Amstrad CPC game Nodes of Yesod, rendered in 2x2 stud Lego tiles.
I am using four 12"x12" baseplates for an overall size of 24"x24".
(edited to fix a rendering glitch in the video)

This time it's the turn of Odin Computer Graphics to get the Kim Justice YouTube treatment! Speaking as someone who was there at the time, I can say that Kim's in-depth coverage is fair, balanced, and pretty accurate.

Here are a couple of snaps of the 8-bit pixel Lego art pieces. These are on a 12" x 12" Lego-style baseplate using 1x1 node bricks, note my hand for scale too (and deliberate mistake).
I have already ordered some genuine lego 2x2 node tiles (smooth surface) plus 4 base plates to make a 24” x 24” piece. That will give a perfectly uniform tile alignment, in addition to a lower surface profile; that said, there is something to be said for the 3D profile of the current set, especially in certain lights.

Following on from yesterday's post, here's another frame of Astro Charlie from Nodes of Yesod, this time in mid-somersault!
Again, credit to my daughters for the construction, Dad 'directed'. :)
It's on a 12" x 12" Lego baseplate using 1x1 node bricks. Will post some stills of the final items.

Astro Charlie from Nodes of Yesod in Lego-style pixels. My daughters did this build, with Dad on logistics, materials, video & editing, etc. Yes, I turned my dining room table into a lego pixel factory on Christmas day. :)
I think these are ace, and great for the office/person-cave wall. Will post more pics of the finished result. These are on 12" x 12" base plates.
What do you guys think?

Back in the heady days of Pocket PC development around 2003, when games were sold through such outlets as Handango, it was either required or de rigueur (I forget which) to create fake box artwork for games submitted to those marketplaces. Here's one for #NodesOfYesod that I came across recently. #retrogames #gamedev #pocketpc #fakebox

@mdf200 here ya go, my old Windows Speccy emulator still works (on Windows 10, I am amazed) captured using camera pointing at the screen (because IDK how to screen cap Windows stuff) this is 224x168 scaled with some lookup tables. And to be clear it is scaled in 16 bit color space so the applicability to really low end devices is questionable, but works fine on 80-100MHz ARM devices like the PocketPC and even some slower SH4 or MIPS based PocketPCs IIRC. And, evidently I am crap at playing Nodes.
