  1. #SheffieldMA - #FullMoonHike

    Monday, October 26, 2026
    8-9PM

    Bartholomew’s Cobble
    105 Weatogue Road
    Sheffield, MA 01257

"Join Ranger Robert for a guided Full Moon Hike at #BartholomewsCobble. Held during each full moon, this 1.5-hour evening adventure follows the tractor path to the top of Hurlburt’s Hill under the light of the moon.

Along the way, participants will experience the Cobble after dark while learning about #NocturnalWildlife and nighttime activity in the area. Guests will stop to listen for #owls and may even hear responses as Ranger Robert demonstrates #OwlCalling techniques during the hike.

This 1.3-mile round-trip hike features approximately 1,000 feet of elevation gain and is considered moderate in difficulty. A headlamp or flashlight is strongly recommended, and hiking poles may be helpful for the climb. Robert will also review #NighttimeHiking safety tips before the group sets out.

Perfect for hikers, wildlife enthusiasts, photographers, and anyone looking to experience the beauty of the Cobble beneath the full moon."

  2. Moonlight is not scenery for nocturnal wildlife—it is energy infrastructure.

A new Science Advances study shows red-necked nightjars synchronise feeding, energy use, migration and breeding with the lunar cycle. On moonless nights, the birds shorten foraging and enter torpor; artificial night lighting risks disrupting this finely timed ecological clock.

  3. Night patrol at the river's edge. 🌙🐾
Spotted hyenas are highly intelligent, highly adaptable apex predators and scavengers that do most of their active hunting and patrolling under the cover of night. Catching this individual pausing along the illuminated waterbank gives a fantastic look at their distinct sloping silhouette and keen attentiveness.

  4. Night vision. 🦁👁️
A dramatic profile shot of a male lion on night patrol. Lions have a reflective layer behind their retinas called the tapetum lucidum, which absorbs extra light and gives them roughly six times better night vision than humans. Watching them navigate the pitch-black savanna with complete confidence is unforgettable.

  5. Night shift on the savanna. 🦁🌙
Lions are predominantly nocturnal and crepuscular hunters, using the cover of darkness to patrol their territory and hunt. Capturing this male emerging from dense foliage after dark highlights a completely different, eerie dimension of savanna life.

  6. Following up my earlier flying squirrel video with another clip from my mom's security cameras. She heard a cat last night (as the temp dropped below freezing) so she left out some food and a warm box/bed, just in case...

...she got #raccoons instead. Which are also cool I guess.

  7. My mom set up a little camera at her house for birds and such - we're pretty sure it picked up a #FlyingSquirrel the other night! Too late/dark for regular squirrels, and the tail isn't right for a rat.
