Last night, there was a fine display of noctilucent clouds (NLC), seen here from Wedemark, north of Hannover, Germany. NLC are highest clouds on our beautiful home planet.

They are at a height of about 82 km, almost at the edge of space, and consist of tiny ice crystals. They can only be seen during our summer months, around midnight, toward the northern horizon. And if you ask me, they are just beautiful.

We may see them again in the coming weeks.

Gestern Abend gab es Leuchtende Nachtwolken, die höchsten Wolken unseres schönen Heimatplaneten.

Sie stehen rund 82 km hoch, also fast an der Grenze zum Weltraum, bestehen aus winzigen Eiskristallen, sind nur in unseren Sommermonaten in den Stunden um Mitternacht Richtung Nordhorizont zu sehen und sind einfach sehr schön.

In den kommenden Wochen kann es die immer wieder geben.

Much warmer than the previous early morning. Venus, shrouded in noctilucent clouds (at minus 125 degrees C!), heralding the coming of one more day of soul-draining heat, hopefully the last.

Shot of NLC’s from the balcony. It’s been a few years since I’ve seen a display of Noctilucent Clouds to the North. For those unfamiliar with these clouds, Noctilucent Clouds (NLCs) are rare, high-altitude clouds that glow a ghostly blue or silver after sunset. They form in the mesosphere in the coldest part of Earth’s atmosphere, at extreme altitudes of around 76 to 85 km (47 to 53 miles) above the surface, making them the highest clouds in our atmosphere. #NoctilucentClouds #yyc #Calgary

These clouds are unpredictable, so you have to have luck. Always look north. In the evening from about two hours after sunset. Weer een nacht met #lichtendenachtwolken, van eind van de avond tot tegen zonsopkomst. Heel bijzonder was dat ze gisteravond tot in het westen reikten. Rond 23:45 uur kon je ze mooi voor de Maan en de planeet Mars zien (1e plaatje). Naar het noordwesten zag het er om 23:54 uur zo uit (2e plaatje). 's Morgens vroeg vormden zich golfjes in de wolken, pal in het noorden (3e plaatje, om 03:06 uur). @ronaldk @fuchsiawolle @sci_photos @miekeroth #noctilucentclouds
