Yes the arts appear. In picture above they are looking at a mural.
Several of my characters are poets, one is a author, and two more are would be author. Shishi is an ex idol, singer, dancer, and song smith. No painters, sculpters, or playwrights. Oh and Airisu is a flying comedian. Ack, ack, ack.

She stood wide-eyed in front of the counter at a small café at one end of the town’s only mall. Clara had adjusted to the mall more quickly than Liam had expected. ‘It’s just like a shopping street in New York—brighter, cleaner and covered—but not that different.’
The movie they had gone to, “Lieutenant Nightingale,” was quite another thing. She had been stunned.
“I saw ‘The Miser’s Heart,’ and that was nothing like that movie,” Clara said of the film. “I prefer the kind of moving pictures Mary Pickford used to star in."
"They were so casual about the 'you know what.'" She blushed. "But I liked that Miss Nightingale wasn’t a poor little thing. Little Kathy was so useless in ‘Miser’s Heart.’ But Barrymore, the thief, was dreamy. But this had so much color and sound; you could hear what they said.”
They had just left the #Paramount film “Lieutenant Nightingale,” a superhero film picked by Rocky. “I pay, I pick um,” he had said.
Liam was just happy that his friend had settled on a film featuring a female superhero. If he had had more money, he would have taken Clara to something more romantic, but being unemployed and the expense of setting Clara up in an apartment had drained what little resources he had. It was all he could do to treat them to a drink at the Mesa Café.
“What’s funny?” Rocky asked.
Clara pointed to a candy jar on the counter. “Penny candy that cost a quarter.”
“It’s just a saying,” Liam explained.
Meanwhile, Rocky picked out a pink gummy worm and paid for it. “Here, Clara. Bet you’ve never had candy like this.”
She looked dubiously at the long pink thing he handed her.
“Go on, take a bite,” Rocky prompted.
Liam opened his mouth to protest, but too late. Clara took a bite, then made a face. “You’re so #mean, Rocky! It’s #sour!”
“What did you expect?” He pointed to the label on the jar, which read “Extra sour peach gummy worms.”

Why? I do all of the above. Why should I let gatekeepers and judmentalist deny me a description?

I think so. My stories are told in the first person by articulate characters.
I rarely use footnotes or parenthetical inserts.

When I combine poetry and photography (hiabun), the poetry would be non-diegetic if I understand the word correctly.

I am addicted to them. Many are to works that are out of copyright, references to Lovecraft are common. There was one recently to Robert W. Chambers' "King in Yellow." There is a reference to Sheridan Le Fanu's "Camilla."
A recent one was to @juliebihn book "Titanic Voyage" where two bit characters resemble two of MC. I suspect only Julie will get the reference.
Similarly, there is a glass swan and an oak tree that are a homage to @QuasiTemporal's time travel series.
I am careful that they are not copyright violations.

I saw a pattern and burst out, “Sumika’s got a girlfriend. A mushy, crushy girlfriend.”
Mistress raised the book as if she were about to bash me with it, and I took off for the shelf again, screaming, “Oggily, puggily, pie. Your blush is as bright as the summer sky.”
And it was. Her cheeks had flushed a brilliant crimson. If I’d still been human, I would have said she was cute. Ah, heck, even as a crow, I thought she was adorable, all flustered.

I have tried it. It's not easy. I think I am too detail-oriented. As for reading, if done well, I have no problem with it. "The Maltese Falcon" is currently on my short TBR list for a reread. I think it's cinematic.

I flip over and scan my timeline after finishing most of my written thoughts. Not the most productive habit, and I don't recommend it.

I read a lot in genre (yuri, time travel, urban fantasy), but also out of genre: classics, Isakia, YA romance, light horror, adventure, mystery, hard-boiled detective, etc. No high fantasy, though.
I am finishing up some BL and H.G. Wells stuff at the moment.

Time-Travel->???: Nope, too central.
Urban Fantasy->Historical Fantasy would just be a little more work.
Fantasy->SF possible, but a pain in the ass.
Yuri/Romance->Adventure: Just back off a bit on the mushy stuff. But the readership I've built would not be happy.Mystery, thriller, spy, S&S probably not.

- Smoking is far more restrictive in Japan than my early novels would indicate.
- Cotton is a luxury material in the Tang, Song, and Heian eras. Linen is for the poor. Opps.

They are only silly because they were caught. The most recent example I can think of is @QuasiTemporal pointed out that a character talks about mind-reading before that information is revealed. Easy fix: delete two words and a couple of commas.

- Don't be afraid of description.
- Articulate characters with good language skills.
- Metaphor, symbolism, etc.

I don't write blunt prose. I don't enjoy reading blunt prose unless it is a new article.
So the answer is, I do not sacrifice blunt prose, just don't use it.

I do:
Pros:
- It makes editing easier later.
- I have a better idea of what I am trying to say, so rearranging words and sentences is easier.
- I am more likely to notice that I have omitted something.
- I am used to it.
- It slows me down a bit so I am clear of where I am going.
Con:
- Very occasionally, it will stall the creative juices.
- Judged by people who write and edit later.

#WritersCoffeeClub 21. When writing about unpleasant feelings, how do you avoid alienating the reader entirely?
Not wallow in it. Otherwise, I assume readers are not so fragile that a little unpleasant feeling won't break them.
Hopefully, they realize I have a covenant with them to deliver what my book sets out to do, i.e. since it is yuri, the two women will kiss and hopefully start a happy life together. There is yuri that doesn't, but I think I convey effectively that mine is HFN.
