I've been a member of the #NationalLawyersGuild since law school, when I first read the infamous "Disorientation Handbook," which taught me that I could and should subvert my law school education, but also that there were many other lawyers and legal workers who were committed to a very different way of doing law.

The #NLG is at a critical time in its history, with the #Trump administration targeting the organization for its solidarity work and its commitment to legal organizing against #fascism

I always assumed much of #Canada 's GHG emissions came from industry and energy generation, but wowza... look at how much the oil and gas industry emit (notably, we're not talking about domestic energy generation). It's like the only share of the pie that's grown significantly.

We really need to gut #oil and #nlg if we ever want to be serious about climate change. Building #pipelines isn't nation building, it's world destroying.

And service members have a moral obligation not to harm the innocent; yet such harm would be inevitable if troops are used against civilians here,” Kathleen Gilberd, executive director of the National Lawyers Guild’s Military Law Task Force (MLTF), told Truthout.

The task force said in a statement that it is “opposed to the use of military forces to ‘put down’ or ‘control’ the heartfelt reactions by community members to workplace immigration raids in Los Angeles and other cities.” Moreover, it added:

"The MLTF will be developing a more comprehensive plan of action, including the use of Article 138 of the UCMJ and the Nuremberg Principles. For now, we pledge our support for members of the National Guard and the active-duty military personnel who are opposed to attacking and killing those who oppose the illegal and immoral removal of undocumented workers."

The Military Law Task Force of the National Lawyers Guild is opposed to the use of military forces to “put down” or “control” the heartfelt reactions by community members to workplace immigration raids in Los Angeles and other cities.

The Trump administration claims the use of the troops is necessary because local police are incapable of protecting the masked, non-uniformed, but heavily armed, federal forces from ICE, DHS, ATF and the FBI. Nothing could be further from the truth.

In California, for example, Governor Gavin Newsom has denounced the use of military troops as a dangerous escalation of the confrontations. We agree. We remember how National Guard Troops fired on student anti-war protestors at American universities.

The MLTF will be developing a more comprehensive plan of action, including the use of Article 138 of the UCMJ and the Nuremberg Principles. For now, we pledge our support for members of the National Guard and the active-duty military personnel who are opposed to attacking and killing those who oppose the illegal and immoral removal of undocumented workers.

It is important for servicemembers to recall in these moments that each step in a chain of orders must be legal for their orders to be legal – including whether those orders are issued under the appropriate authority.

Federal agents use tactics like “door knocks” and grand jury subpoenas to target activists and surveil social movements. This training will cover how to support activists in federal investigations and grand jury proceedings. Attendees will learn about federal grand jury subpoenas and litigation, with a focus on representing witnesses who wish to litigate the validity of a subpoena. This training will provide guidance for attorneys, and help prepare activists and support teams for what to expect throughout the grand jury process.

NOTE: The NLG Federal Defense Hotline is also available to activists and lawyers in order to report verified incidents of federal repression, such as FBI “door-knocks” at activists’ homes, grand jury investigations and subpoenas, and any other federal law enforcement efforts to undermine civil rights, including federal grab squads and the use of unidentified federal agents to police protests. Hotline allows callers to have privileged conversations with attorneys and to receive attorney referrals, know-your-rights information, and resources for responding to grand jury investigations and subpoenas.
