Environment Southland is batting for the wrong team.

In July 2025 Gore's Coopers Wells water supply was shut down due to seriously high nitrate spiking. This ODT story outlines the lengths the regulator's staff went to in their determination to deflect suspicion away from dairy.

The ES science manager Karen Wilson has tarnished her credentials by saying that "no cause was found for the spike."

This aerial image shows intensive dairy right next door to the wells.

Wilson is also deeply involved in the subsequent cover-up.

Given heat, pressure, and a catalyst, we can combine it with atmospheric #Nitrogen to make #Ammonia, a direct fertiliser, and starting point for Nitric acid and then #Nitrates. Among #AmmoniumNitrate 's uses is fertiliser for growng food.

I think we might build an Ammonia plant next to a #fission boiler, and use #heat as well as perhaps #electricity from it.

I remember BIll Stowe clashing with ag-lobbyists, where the lobbyists claimed they were doing exactly the right things to protect water in Iowa, and that further legislation and lawsuits were not necessary.

Now, in 2025, Central Iowans must curtail water usage, not because there isn't enough water, but because the source water is too contaminated with farm runoff nitrates.

On this #day 110 years ago; 23rd May 1913; the #British built three mast iron #sailing #barque, the SV #Cromdale, ran aground off the #Lizard Point (the most southerly point of British mainland) in thick #fog. The #ship was on a #voyage from #Taltal, #Chile to #Fowey, #Cornwall with a cargo of #nitrates. There were no casualties but within a week the #ship had been broken up completely by the sea.
