  2. Tangentially related to this CME event caught by PSP is this fascinating video of comet C/2023 P1 (Nishimura) taken by the STEREO-A solar observatory during Sep 17-24, 2023.

    The movie shows the comet's ion tail interacting with the solar wind. There was a glancing blow from a coronal mass ejection (CME) during the Sept 22-23 timeframe!

  7. By far the best deep-in-twilight-at-dusk image of comet #Nishimura I've seen so far just dropped at spaceweathergallery2.com/indiv (taken on La Palma at 2.1 km altitude). Meanwhile I've summed up the 'evening' sky / perihelion experiemce with Nish in skyweek.wordpress.com/2023/09/ - the comet behaved as normal as one could imagine, no fizzling in the Sun's heat, no outburst either, just doing what I predicted 3 weeks ago in skyweek.wordpress.com/2023/08/ i.e. getting ~100 times brighter over that interval. ;-)

Whoa - easily the best image of #comet #Nishimura in the kinda-evening sky I've seen so far, taken only hours from #perihelion: "2023 sep. 16 18.00 UT 40x1 sec 30x0,5-0,8sec Leica-Apo-Telyt 280/4.0 Nikon Z6mod Michael Jäger" (original caption). No outburst of brightness thus (well, hoping for one had been a longshot anyway) but also no heat damage, let alone destruction, to the nucleus. Sadly in 3 days the comet is (orbit-wise) history for Europe anyway. And won't be better further south either.

  12. As always it is unfortunate and plainly misleading how photographic images of comet C/2023 P1 (Nishimura) imply an easy to see naked eye comet with a long tail. It is not.
    I can understand that not every photographer adds this explanation to their images but I have now seen so many click-bait websites praising this comet as something for the layman. Not nice. #comet #nishimura

    Taken Sat. morning, Sep 9 from Cinder Hills Overlook/Sunset Crater in AZ.

    Tail length ~6°"

    At 0.84 AU distance, the tail is ~13M km long!

  17. The light curve below shows that comet C/2023 P1 (Nishimura) is brightening up nicely. Current apparent magnitude is below 4 (lower is brighter).

    In theory, objects with mag 6 and lower are visible to the naked eye, but currently the comet is low on the horizon during the early morning hours, so visibility depends on local conditions. Binoculars help.

    After Sep 17, it will be too close to setting sun as seen from the northern hemisphere.

    Astronomy aficionados are buzzing about a bright new comet.

    The ball of dust and ice is formally named C/2023 P1, but is also called #Comet #Nishimura, for Hideo Nishimura, the Japanese photographer who first spotted it on August 12.
