"The ‘Purple Heart Battalion’ fought Nazis abroad and injustice at home

These Japanese American soldiers amassed a total of nearly 9,500 Purple Hearts.

Their government’s actions did not strip many of them of their willingness to serve. About 33,000 of them either enlisted or were drafted during World War II. Japanese Americans fought heroically for the country of their birth. Most of them served in the 442nd Regimental Combat Team, which included 21 Medal of Honor recipients.

The 442nd suffered so many casualties that it became known as the 'Purple Heart Battalion.'

The Nisei soldiers refused to allow the injustice and prejudice they endured to affect their military service. For two seemingly endless days, they battled dense foliage and icy rain as they attempted to avoid setting off German mines. As they neared the ridge where the Germans had more than 270 members of the 1st Battalion, 141st Infantry Regiment, 36th Infantry Division surrounded, the enemy unleashed artillery fire, the National Museum of the U.S. Army reported. The 442nd sustained several casualties but kept fighting.

The 442nd launched several attacks, but could not save the Lost Battalion. Finally, after the Nazis killed one of his fellow Nisei soldiers, Pvt. George Sakato charged the enemy. By himself, he killed 12 Germans, wounded two more, and personally captured four others. Sakato also helped his platoon detain 34 Germans as prisoners.

'As a unit, we were used like cannon fodder,' Sakato later said. '… I was willing to die for my country.'

The same day, Pvt. Barney Hajiro charged a slope ominously called Suicide Hill. Hajiro took out two machine-gun nests and killed two snipers while dodging fire.

Sakato and Hajiro epitomized the fierce resolve of the 442nd’s soldiers. That determination finally paid off six days into the intense fighting when they saved the Lost Battalion."

If you meet a Japanese American, it’s also a pretty good bet, they probably won’t spontaneously start talking about what they or their family went through, how they feel about it, and how they or their family recovered from the ordeal.

I (Christina) wanted to rectify that by sitting down with my old friend Chie Furuya, whose parents (as tiny children), grandparents, and other family members were “sent to camp”, to ask her about it. The answers and stories she had for me were both fascinating and unexpectedly heartening. Her people are a resilient, cheerful people and I feel like there are life lessons for all of us here, in terms of withstanding and recovering from severe injustice (and coming out on top).

Ariel’s addition to this episode description is to point out that Japanese internment occurred in Canada in the early 20th century as well. We (by which she means Canada, or perhaps so-called Canada, as she likes to call it) aren't some bastion of anti-racism and tolerant plurality (if we ever were). The 442nd, combined with the 100th Infantry Battalion, remains the #most #decorated #combat #unit in #history for its size and length of service. The World War II unit was made up mostly of second generation #JapaneseAmericans.

As a Japanese person living in the U.S., I am eternally grateful to my ancestors who set foot in this country, worked tirelessly to earn recognition as citizens despite facing both individual and systemic discrimination, and bravely fought in the war to defend their adopted homeland and fellow Americans. Their sacrifices and perseverance paved the way for people like me to come here and live a good life.

To erase such a significant part of their history - their effort, sacrifice, and legacy - from the Army website is, in my opinion, an act of arrogance and a profound disrespect toward those who fought so hard to help "make America great."

As a Japanese person living in the U.S., I am eternally grateful to my ancestors who set foot in this country, worked tirelessly to earn recognition as citizens despite facing both individual and systemic discrimination, and bravely fought in the war to defend their adopted homeland and fellow Americans. Their sacrifices and perseverance paved the way for people like me to come here and live a good life.

On February 1943, President #Roosevelt signed an #ExecutiveOrder that created the 442nd Regimental Combat Team.

It was a #Nisei unit, of #Japanese #American #volunteers recruited from U.S. #internment #camps.

Finally got around to playing our first few games of NISEI (the community-run continuation of Android Netrunner) - liked it a lot! The asymmetric nature of hacker/runner vs Corp is pretty interesting.
As the Corp you place agendas and assets and deploy ICE to protect them. The Runner builds up their hardware and software and goes on runs to break through your ice and steal your agendas.
The rules are explained pretty terribly, but glad we got there in the end! #boardgames #nisei #netrunner

Remembrance for the Day the Cat Jumped.

And, as taught me by Dr. Ginger Wilson at Duke University when I was 13 years old: just as it’s necessary to remember the infamy of Dec. 7, 1941, so too must we remember the infamy of Executive Order 9066, which two months later authorized the forced relocation of Japanese-Americans — #Issei and #Nisei alike — from the West Coast of the United States to internment camps further inland.

Okay, genuinely love that the #NISEI "Learn to Play" guide has an "Introduction to Card Games" section that goes over the basics of hands and discard piles and the like. Costs me nothing to skip while making sure that all are welcome here.

Every bit of "common" knowledge that you gloss over excludes a whole swath of potential players, leading to a more insular community. The fact that the intro makes sure folks who have never picked up a deck of cards before are given the info they need is a breath of fresh air!
