A pity. Beattie struck me as a decent man, a man who wanted a pragmatic and constructive unionism, one in which people not of a traditionally unionist background could also feel at home.
I don't know if that's achievable. I do know that, if I wanted to preserve the Union, I'd be trying to achieve it.
One wonders when people will twig that the TUVification of unionism is a great gift to the shinners.

About time I updated my #introduction after a Mastodon hiatus!
So, hello 👋 I'm a postdoc academic and political analyst based in #NorthernIreland. Currently on maternity leave but still popping up on TV, radio and in print discussing international current affairs, Northern Ireland, and politics in the UK and Ireland.
My interests/teaching areas include #UKpolitics, #NIpolitics, #devolution, #PowerSharing, #Brexit, #EUlaw and #constitutions.

@JohnLoader6 @bioluminescently @harriettmb
It is time for some uncomfortable truths for Unionism - they aren't appealing to the leafy wealthy areas of #NI anymore. Sinn Fein did if you look at where they gained seats last week - eg Balmoral! Plus some Unionists who voted must have given a transfer to them.
So what does that tell them about their current path - Unionism isn't coming out to vote & moderate #Unionists are voting for #Alliance is greater numbers. Why Jeff? #NIpolitics
-
I would say the #UUP vote is disappearing to the #Alliance party.
I really doubt that #Unionism vote had disappeared - large parts of Unionism's vote stayed at home. One electoral ward was as low as 33%!
They are still there but their politicians aren't motivating them to come out! #NIpolitics

Lilian Seenoi Barr, SDLP Councillor for Foyleside-Derry, has become the first ever black person to be elected in Northern Ireland. 👏 👏 👏
-
I am catching up on yesterday's #NI #LE23 results before I watch the rest today.
I am stunned at the #BlackMountain DEA in Belfast - Sinn Fein ran SEVEN candidates and got ALL of them returned! Plus they got all three in #GlengormleyUrban returned!
#NIpolitics has shifted...again
NI was created to have a permanent #Unionist majority! That is gone.....
Stunning if you know our history!

I had hope that Doyg would follow in Mike's footsteps. To try and make #UUP more open and understanding to non unionists but he failed in that once he stood beside Jeff who stood beside Jim & 🚮
He had the opportunity to attack the DUP'S stance and take a stand. However, he decided not to take that root. So Alliance is the option for many moderate unionists.#NIpolitics
-
Another reason why the #UUP won't he getting a vote or transfer from me ever again.
I made a mistake of giving them a transfer at the last assmebly election. Thanks to Jeff and behaviour like this, how I vote in the local elections this time will be very different to last year's assembly election.
They really could offer a moderate unionist a home but while they side with TUV & #DUP. They will drive voters to the #Alliance party. #NIpolitics

Arlene #Foster doesn't belong on that list even before her ill-judged remarks on #Biden. She is no peacemaker! She is a bitter woman who can't accept that the #NI she is comfortable in is disappearing. She is RW #mouthpiece who had found her natural home on #GBNews. She doesn't deserve to be on that stage. What defence or evidence does Queens University have to justify her award? #NIpolitics

Jeff appears to think that he will be getting more concessions from the #Westminster government over the #WindsorFramework!
He is still pushing the narrative about his panel he created reporting back. Jr bounced you into voting against it. Your party is split, you are too weak to hold it together and we know there is an almighty bun fight coming after the local elections.
Which Jeff will run away from like he did whe he left the #UUP. #NIpolitics

The #NorthernIrelandAssembly is meeting today for what is set to be the fifth failed attempt to elect a Speaker since the May election
Here is the link to follow live: https://niassembly.tv/live-stream-1/

#NorthernIreland is currently without an Assembly or Executive
In this (just published) piece for UK in a Changing Europe, I look at why the path back to power-sharing is far from straightforward, and consider some longer-term consequences of the impasse ⬇️
