Crews there are focused on backhauling equipment and completing suppression repair work, including rehabilitation of a dozer line built during efforts on the now-extinguished Deadwood Fire.“Statewide, 405 wildfires have burned just under 1 million acres this season. In the Upper Yukon Zone, covering 51.9 million acres in northeastern Alaska, 57 fires have burned roughly 180,700 acres. Five fires were called out in the Zone Monday, while 32 remain active. The Zone also recorded 891 lightning strikes, most accompanied by rain.
“Elsewhere in BLM AFS’s protection area, which spans the northern half of Alaska, fire activity continues to taper off. The Tatanka Hotshot crew arrived yesterday and will join forces with the USFS R10 crew. They will continue mop-up and hazard tree removal along the south and southwest perimeter of the Ninetyeight Fire (#218). The sprinkler system along the south and southwest perimeter of the fire was extended to cover the areas that were worked yesterday. Completion has been increased to 54% despite fire weather in the area slowly drying out since receiving the last trace of rain.

Type 3 Incident Management Team takes command of #NinetyeightFire

This morning, a Type 3 Incident Management Team took command of the Ninetyeight Fire (#218), which is burning north of the Salcha River.
The Ninetyeight Fire is currently estimated at 3,743 acres. On Tuesday, the fire’s eastern edge did not show any real heat in the open tundra area and there was no northward progression on that side. There is creeping and smoldering with some isolated torching in pockets along the southern edge of the fire along the river (though not near cabins), as well as creeping and smoldering in spruce along the western edge in the terrain.
Protection of structures and Alaska Native allotments continues to be a primary concern. Firefighters will continue to bolster protection of structures and Alaska Native allotments on the east side of the fire, cutting and prepping line, and and will mop up along the southern edge of the fire closest to structures from river mile 36 to 38. Firefighters will also work to secure line deeper into the fire’s perimeter in areas of white spruce, and assess natural barriers behind Alaska Native allotments. Crews are working hard to keep the fire north of the Salcha River.
Scattered precipitation is expected to continue for the next several days, with wetting rains possible by Thursday.

Ninetyeight Fire receives rain; Smokejumpers continue to make progress

The #NinetyeightFire (#218), which is burning north of the Salcha River, received wetting rain Monday, and the fire showed decreased activity overall. Rain will likely continue on & off for the next few days.Smokejumpers made good progress MON protecting structures & Alaska Native allotments. They completed the setup of hoses, sprinklers, & pumps around nearly all structures near Mile 34 & between Miles 37-38. They’ve also implemented protective measures around allotments in the area.
Smokejumpers plan to continue with protection of the last few structures near Mile 34 & between Miles 37-38, & will work to establish a line around the fire. The Big River Crew, an Alaska contract crew, is arriving today to join the smokejumpers.
A Type 3 incident management team assumes command of the fire on WED.
