With all the technology we have, you still need to power down a device in order to have it's {lipo} batteries charged at relatively controllable temperatures.

That's the reason why removable batteries are a logical thing. That is also the reason why I do not understand from the perspective of fire safety, that volatile power units are permanently sealed in devices.

I have a few obsolete Android devices that are still perfectly usable, for lighter tasks. I refuse to pry them open in order to replace the volatile batteries which are charging at temperatures where the devices need to be shut down. A procedure I cannot do, because the power buttons and the logic integrated circuits behind them are broken. I need to use PPE in order to charge those things safely!

Luckily The European Union got fed up with this sealed battery phenomena and thanks to the Europeans we shall have normal battery separation again in our devices

People recommending you manually use a CC/CV power supply are not helping you 😉

Good chargers will let you set what *type* of battery it is, and will correctly charge all major types. I've got a four-cell (four independent charging circuits) that will happily charge NiCad, Nickel Metal Hydride, LiFePO4, Lithium-ion polymer, and a few others. It mostly autodetects the correct type.

They're not stupidly expensive. The model I have is currently $37 Canadian from Amazon:

  23. I don't suppose anyone knowledgeable about #Batteries and their charging mechanisms might have some insight as to what's going on, here...

This is the rechargeable battery for my new (to me) Phillips Velo PDA... It appears to be two #NiMh cells tap-welded together, with a conductive band close to one end that has a lead going to this mid-point, presumably so the PDA knows it's allowed to recharge this one.

I'd like to recreate it, if possible...

  24. PS: Once you revive a dud battery, it won’t have a great capacity. You can generally get back some of that by cycling it a few times.

I use the Opus BT-C3100 which is a handy device for all sorts of rechargeable chemistries and form factors, including 1865s.

My opus has a refresh option which will do three cycles automatically.

    #DIY #rechargablebatteries #NiMH #ProTip

  25. If your rechargeable batteries won’t charge, don’t give up hope. Modern chargers require the battery to have some small bit of voltage to start charging. So if you connect (in parallel +,+ and -,/-) a dud to a good battery for 30 seconds or so, that might be enough.

I built this simple rig and went through a dozen duds and got most of them to bounce back enough to get my Opus to take them. Huzzah!

  26. My DIY trickle #NiMH charger is complete.

I used a battery box from 5V led strip lighting to hold the batteries.

Putting my meter in circuit it read mid 60's milliamp charge per battery.

Here are two pictures. One is me testing it with croc clips connected and the other with permanent USB connection and lots of hotmelt glue holding things in place.

  27. So, #Battery question:

I am buying my mom some LED candles for #Christmas.

    amazon.com/dp/B06X3VQRC7/?tag=

And I want to buy rechargeable batteries for them. I already have this recharger: amazon.com/Panasonic-K-KJ17MCA

Should I buy more Endloop batteries? Or will cheaper ones not explode in this?

I'm considering either these EBL: amazon.com/EBL-Rechargeable-Ba

    Or these...Tanatare: amazon.com/Tanatare-Rechargeab

    Any advice?
