To pass the torch
to the fresh and young
is a work of music
painfully sung —

— and yet the chorus
needs fresh voices
while others must fade
and make hard choices

A bound up leather book:
What secrets lie within? —
Its cover bears an emerald gem,
a deep green eye with mocha skin:
She’s no mere book, she waves to me,
she’s a goddess, that’s plain to see

In the darkness, burning bright,
a lonesome tower shares its light
without a fee or expectation —
it simply gives illumination.
If only we could all just share
the kind of warmth that I felt there

Good night 🌙

Classic car: an Essex Super Six on display at the Spandau Citadel, Berlin-Spandau, 26 Dec 2023.

For a brief time in the early 1930s, the Essex — from the Hudson Motor Car Company of Detroit — was built in Spandau for the German market.

It helped popularize fully enclosed cars and had many innovations we take for granted today.

When the darkness comes
will you fall to the night
or will you pierce the pall
with your inner light?

[a poem a day keeps the darkness at bay]

Good night 🌙

And while the world may burn
let us sit quietly by the fire
hold each other close
stare into the flames
and enjoy the simple gift
of stickbread

They say that life’s a crock
yet crockery’s quite useful indeed

And as she trudged on through the snow
the distance grew between us
Cold felt colder, ice bit harder,
and tension grew more serious
And yet we stuck together still,
warding off that looming chill

At the Sinterklaas market fair
the biggest gift that I found there
cost nothing, yet was a treasure:
just people sharing their pleasure

Christmas markets, part X
Sinterklaas, the happy saint

Photo series:
Christmas markets, part IX
My God, it’s full of stars

If only stars could shine so bright
without the need for darkness‘ plight:
But when the blackness blankets minds
that tiny glow feels much more divine

Photo series:
Christmas markets, part VI
As the lathe turns
3 photos

The lathe turns
stripping the wood
carving it down
to its maker’s chosen shape
while life turns us
making us who we are
cut by cut, year by year
marked by the distant sun
circling back ’round
while the Yule wood burns

Photo series:
Christmas markets, part II —
You are the gift
4 photos

And if each Christmas stressed you out
it might just be a misplaced duty —
You needn’t buy expensive things:
instead give warmth and simple beauty
It’s not the spending of your bread
Give freely of your self instead

Up high she stands on her gilded dais
so far above the daily fray
But all around is a frozen waste
and love and friendship she’ll never taste

Christmas markets, part I —
Forge light in the darkness

Surrounded by people yet quite alone
the smith works at his fire
The flames lick at the tongs that clench the iron
and though sighing his mind is inspired
Prometheus proudly watches above
his tired heart beats with iron love

And as I trudged on through the cold
a magnolia called out to me
And in the hoarfrost of winter’s breath
she reached out a green hand, that tree
Her buds of pale velvet: fingertips
that pointed to a future warm spring
I took her soft grasp and greeted her
and imagined green wedding rings

A king once built himself a house
and called it Sans Souci
In French that means it’s free from cares
but cares are all I see

While columns may crumble
and roofs may collapse
and rafters may tumble
and stone walls may well crack
the constant is life
and life must go on
For Time is our foe
and yet intimate friend

What makes you noble?
To be born a king?
To have others
your praises to sing?
No — nobility flows
from the joy you bring

A birch tree’s tassels hanging down
in sleepy failing fields of brown
and fading flecks of green and gold —
It’s nature’s time of feeling old

And as a darkness now descends
and fear and worry vex my heart,
I tell myself that life depends
on sharing hope — where future starts

And Fall has fallen and colors fade
The frost is biting as winter’s made
A time to reap, a time to sow,
a time to slumber as cold winds blow,
awaiting spring and sun’s rebirth
another cycle in our lives on earth
