  1. "Sailing," Nikolaos Cheimonas, 1927.

Cheimonas, or Himonas, or Heimonas (1864-1929) was a Russian-born painter of Greek ancestry. He grew up in Yalta, the son of Greek parents, and was educated in St. Petersburg. He married a woman from a noble family, taught painting in St. Petersburg, but had to flee the country during the Russian Revolution when his wife was imprisoned.

Fleeing to Greece, he established himself as a painter and his wife was able to join him after her release. They settled on the island of Skyros, where he died of malaria.

While not really a member of the Impressionists, his work was definitely of that school; many of his paintings of Greece have the same sun-drenched feel. Just the thing for a day like today!

From the National Gallery - Alexandros Soutsos Museum, Athens.
