I'm a bit surprised that Niklaus Wirth et al would use Verillog instead of VHDL to implement Oberon RISC5.
Is anyone well-versed enough to try to bring some light on this topic?
I don't have a preference, but with VHDL being so closely related, at least in style, to the Wirth family of languages, it seems at least somewhat interesting that he would choose the language that is less similar to his own.

Quiet manifestos by two masters in #CS. They are must reads for anyone who is interested in designing systems and tools, in any field. The calls for #simplicity, economy & useability are of universal relevance. And these biographically motivated essays are themselves models in simplicity and concreteness, resting unboastingly on the personal achievements of their authors.

RIP Niklaus Wirth. Pascal was my first language at University. Modula-2 the language I had to help students with when I was a TA.
And, as PhD my first project was to formalize the static semantics of Pascal, for which I studied the “Pascal User Manual” day after day. It formed the foundation of my PhD thesis.

Ein angenehmer bescheidener Mensch erzählt dort seinen Werdegang und wie er u.a. die Programmiersprache Pascal entwickelte und damit weltberühmt wurde. Mit Pascal habe ich damals meine Diplomarbeit erstellt und war für mich der Einstieg in die Programmiersprache C.

I wonder what Wirth would have to say about it. He was developing similar computer systems: Lilith with Modula 2 and Ceres with Oberon.

Er wurde u.a. für seine Programmiersprache #Pascal und Weiterentwicklungen sowie seinen konsequenten Minimalismus und Kritik an langsamen IT-Systemen bekannt.

I hadn’t realised #NiklausWirth died on New Year’s Day. Many a time of my Bachelor studies was spent learning about his achievements. Pascal was the programming language of choice to teach us almost all of the programming concepts.
