Tymczasem iPhone 17 Air był i nadal jest dostępny „od ręki”, zarówno w dostawie, jak i w sklepach stacjonarnych. Potwierdzały to też wcześniejsze analizy rynkowe, m.in. z Morgan Stanley czy Counterpoint Research, które wskazywały na silny popyt na bazowego iPhone’a 17 i wersję Pro Max, całkowicie milcząc na temat wariantu Air.

Nowy raport Nikkei Asia zdaje się potwierdzać te obawy. Powołując się na źródła w łańcuchu dostaw, serwis twierdzi, że zamówienia na komponenty dla iPhone’a 17 Air zostały obcięte „niemal do poziomów końca produkcji”. Jeden z menedżerów dostawcy komponentów stwierdził, że prognoza „niemal weszła w tryb wygaszania produkcji”, mimo że telefon dopiero co trafił na rynek.

Jest jednak i dobra wiadomość dla Apple. Słabe wyniki sprzedażowe modelu Air są w pełni rekompensowane przez pozostałe smartfony z nowej linii. Według tych samych źródeł, „nieoczekiwanie solidny popyt” na podstawowy model iPhone 17 oraz na wersję Pro przekroczył oczekiwania firmy. Apple miało już zwiększyć zamówienia na produkcję bazowego iPhone’a 17 o około 5 milionów sztuk, a także dodać zamówienia na high-endowy model 17 Pro.

Jak zauważają komentatorzy, wygląda na to, że Apple po raz kolejny ma problem ze strategią czterech modeli. Po niepowodzeniu wersji „mini” i umiarkowanym sukcesie wariantu „Plus”, próba wprowadzenia na rynek supercienkiego modelu „Air” również wydaje się chybiona. Wygląda na to, że klienci preferują jasny podział na model podstawowy i model Pro, nie znajdując wartości w droższym, ale niebędącym „Pro” wariancie pośrednim.
