  1. @danielholt

    Welcome to the sport!

    My best advice:

Use the #NikeRunClub app. It has "Couch to 5/10k" plans (like others in this thread recommend), and the guided runs with @coachbennett are a game-changer.

Start slow. The race is long and in the end, it is only with yourself. Focus on how you feel, not on the metrics.

Show up for yourself. Consistency is key. (But with two young kids, it can be hard. I know.) Know why you run.

Try to have fun. Play around.

    And celebrate your victories!

  2. CW: Run chat cos I am a runner now

    @miffyhelen

    That's cool, indeed!

I obviously do not know your preferences, but @coachbennett's philosophy of #running may be helpful when you struggle with motivation. He's on social media, a newsletter, and a nice podcast - but the guided runs in the #NikeRunClub app is *the* game-changer.

Keep it up. We're all rooting for you. :-)

  3. A nice and inspirational run with @coachbennett and Shalane Flanagan (in the #NikeRunClub app) through a dark and humid morning.

This was a good one, and even though I did not quite find my rhythm, I had a blast. Kept it easy and increased the effort slightly throughout.

  4. It was a dark and terribly stormy morning, and to the beat of LCD Soundsystem's "45:33" I did a fartlek:
    - 6:00 warm-up
    - 2 x 1:30 @ 7/10 effort
    - 4 x 1:00 @ 8/10
    - 4 x 0:30 @ 9/10
    - 4 x 0:15 @ 10/10
    - warm-down until I got home

It was hard, and I got to really push myself, and it was fun, and I look forward to soon do it again.

  5. Had a blast with #NikeRunClub's "Worst Advice Ever Run" this morning.

    "No pain, no gain."
"If you aren't #running hard, you're hardly running."
    "Numbers don't lie."
    "Sleep is for the weak."
"You need to run every day."
    "Running is boring."

@coachbennett, my philosopher of running, humorously shredded all this terrible advice, setting me up for a fun run. It was just what I needed. Thank you.

  6. Morning intervals: 8 x 80 secs of various fast paces. Again, mixing things up on speed runs (and in general) was so much fun.

Due to windchill, it felt like -7 celsius out there (this one's for you, @pfernandes). Cold, but nice and clear.

A minor issue with the #nikerunClub app is that it doesn't count the light running I do between the intervals. It is what it is.

    Distance counted: 3.92k (total: 188.37k)

  7. A few words on my experience with #Runna.

The app looks great and made a (solid and ambitious) AI-powered personalized training plan. Fine.

However, it provides audio feedback on pace *all* the time. "Slow down!" "Speed up!" Sometimes three such cues in 100 meters (and then 21.1k is a looooong way to go). It turned #running into a mechanical activity.

Could it make me faster? Maybe. Would it ruin my enjoyment of running? Certainly.

And that is why I stick with #NikeRunClub and @coachbennett.

  8. An amazing morning run. It was cold (0 degree C), and it was pitch black when I started, but over the two hours the sun rose and I got to watch the world wake up. I spotted hares and a flock of geese, a young deer just 10 meters from me.

My free trial of #Runna expires now, and I won't move to a paid subscription. #NikeRunClub is better for me.

  9. A tempo run in the dark of the morning with The War on Drugs as my soundtrack. Many runners out there. This was a hard run, and it felt good.

I test the #Runna app these days. The guided runs in #NikeRunClub are gold, but I need something to push me a little further on especially long runs. Maybe this is it..?

    Distance: 9.63k (total: 80.71k)

  10. Friday was Halloween - and this morning, I went on the "Spooky Speed Run" with Count Bænnætt (aka @coachbennett) in the #NikeRunClub app.

At 1k, in the dark and the quite of our small town, I passed a crowd with torches. I think they were on their way to surprise a friend on his birthday, but with John Carpenter synth in my ears it sure was a little spooky.

Distance: 4.98k (total this cycle: 71.08k)

  11. My first speed run in ages, I did the "First Fartlek Run" with @coachbennett in the #NikeRunClub app: 17 minutes of alternating pace to push myself (+ 15 minutes to get home). This was hard but fun.

    Let's make today count!

    #ParisMarathon in T minus 166 days.

Distance: 6.22k (total this cycle: 33.38k)
    Pace: 5'13"

  12. A wholesome morning run with @coachbennett and Andy Puddicombe at the #NikeRunClub.

I am now only a little over 13k away from my goal for this May - namely to run 191.46k in support of The Danish Multiple Sclerosis Society.

    Have a good one, everyone!!

  13. A short and easy morning run to see how I'm doing two days after the Copenhagen Marathon.

The legs are still a bit heavy, but the joy of #running is intact. See you on the next starting line.

    #MastoRunDK #EveryRunHasAPurpose #NikeRunClub

  14. I finished the Copenhagen Marathon in 4:24:28. This is a new personal record.

This race constitutes a substantial personal victory for me. I had a plan, and I executed it. When I was in trouble, I adapted.

My goal: to cross the starting line ✅
My hope: to enjoy the race and finish ✅
My pipe dream: to beat my personal record (4:38:25) ✅

Today, I feel very good. Proud and grateful. No sore legs. I might even go for a run...

  15. When you turn the last corner of the Copenhagen Marathon, it’s about 0.5km to the finish line. You can see it come closer, and the support from the crowd is massive.

On the homestretch, I couldn’t help but celebrate. Picking up the pace, cheering the crowd, being completely in control.

This was a victorious, emotional, and almost transcendent moment for me.

Every road I had run had led me here.

  16. At around 40.5km, as I turned the corner to Østerbrogade and the final stage of the race, I regained control and ran the race I wanted to. Tired, yes, but also energized by the crowd and the fact that I was almost there.

With less that 2km left, I knew I could do this; it’s just the distance from home to my local bakery. I steadily picked up pace, visualizing the final strides, knowing now that I would finish #Cph42 strong.

  17. At around 35km, my stomach began to hurt. Drinking water was a struggle, and energy gels were out of the picture. At some point, I even contemplated “tactical vomiting” to clear my stomach – but I also quickly rejected this horrible idea. For the next kms, I would alternate between #running very slowly and walking. I still knew I would finish, but I was under pressure now.

Things got better. Experience and my mental approach helped me.

  18. Around 30km in, I had to pee. Until now, everything had been smooth sailing, but of course my legs and feet started feeling sore. Still, the execution of my initial race-plan worked A+.

Finally, by the Royal Theater at 33km, there was a toilet. The logistics of getting to it behind a fence were a bit complicated, however, and this took more time than it should have.

Still, I had a good feeling about everything.

  19. Around 5km, my colleague Liisa and her fiancé cheered.

At 24km, someone yelled my name – and there was my wife and daughter!! I knew they would come to Copenhagen to support me, but I didn’t expect them this early. What a wonderful surprise. I got a hug, a kiss, and a peeled orange. It was glorious.

At 28km, they were there again. And again at 34km, where they had a peeled banana ready for me (pic is earlier in the thread).

  20. The first half of #Cph42 was a celebration. The crowd was amazing. Thank you, Copenhagen!

At 19km, a little girl high-fived me and yelled: “I hope you will win!” Now that is the kind of support you dream of, and it gave me a boost.

Only seconds later, I heard her yell the exact same message at another runner. What has the world come to if you cannot trust little girls cheering at marathons? Still, all was good. Steady pace. Onwards.

  21. For the first long stretch of #Cph42, my #running was just as it should be. Disciplined, my pace on point (6 min/km), my energy intake ran like a clockwork. All according to plan. One stride after another, one song after another in my headphones, one km after another celebrated.

The first 11km, I ran with the 4:20 pacers. But I felt very good and strong (physically and mentally), so I slowly progressed from this group and into the next one.

  22. I would actively pursue enjoying it and having fun through #Cph42. Long runs are hard, but a positive attitude goes a long way as for the mental game.

So whenever a kid held out her/his hand, I would high-five it. I would fist-bump and celebrate every km passed. I would thank the volunteers who handed out water. I would salute the people in the crowds. I would smile and laugh.

All of this came naturally. I had a blast out there.

  23. Yesterday, I ran the Copenhagen Marathon, #Cph42.

It was my third marathon (after #running two last year). I knew I could do this.

My race-plan was to aim for a consistent pace of around 6min/km, knowing I would likely not be able to keep it up through the entire race. But I would go as far as I could, then take it from there. I would stock up on energy with a gel every 5km and have water or an energy drink at each depot.

  24. BOOM!! Copenhagen Marathon done and conquered!

The short story: almost all of the race, I was in full control and executed my plan A+; then I had some kms with stomach issues that obviously slowed me down and they were hard; then I overcame it and finished strong. Overall, I truly enjoyed it, and I am most happy, content, and proud of what I just achieved.

    I also set a new PR: 4:26:28.

    The longer story comes later.

  26. Q: What did it take to get to the starting line of #Cph42?
A: Showing up consistently and a support system.

First, according to the statistics of the #NikeRunClub app, I have covered 546 km in around 55 hours since I started my 18-weeks training plan. I was in fair shape before that.

Second, I have received an insane amount of support, not least from my patient family and from the #running community here. You know who you are. Thank. You. So. Much!!!

  28. For the nerds, here is (some of) my gear and stuff for #Cph42.

    Shoes: Nike Pegasus 41
    Watch: Casio F-91W
    Headphones: Shockz OpenPro Run
Energy: a High5 gel every 5k (mainly citrus and berry flavored)
Guidance: @coachbennett's Marathon Race guided run in the #NikeRunClub app
Music: open.spotify.com/playlist/6CFy - The War on Drugs "Nothing to Find" and "Red Eyes" (both studio and live) are instant boosts of energy :-)

  29. Today, I run the Copenhagen Marathon (#Cph42). I've looked forward to this since September.

My goal: to cross the starting line
My hope: to enjoy the race and finish
My pipe dream: to beat my personal record (4:38:25)

I think a new PR is realistic, but all bets are off for the last 10k... I don't fear the marathon, but I do respect it.

I'm runner no. 1624. You can follow along through copenhagenmarathon.dk/en/ or the app.

  31. Don’t think I’ve had to abort a run before but today was the day. Had a 1hr 55 min zone 2 run scheduled for my half marathon training plan and was about 30 minutes short of completion when my ankle gave way and caused a minor sprain. Luckily it wasn’t that bad so even though the run had to be stopped I could still walk the last 4k to my car #running #halfmarathontraining #longrun #nikerunclub #NikeRunning #runningcommunity #runnersofmastodon #mastorunners #oldguysrule
