  1. NIGHTJARS UNVEIL SONICCOURTSHIP DANCES

  4. Nocturnal migratory #birds follow rhythm of the moon phys.org/news/2026-05-nocturna

Moonlight drives the energy balance and annual cycle of a nocturnal forager science.org/doi/10.1126/sciadv

"Moonlight determines when the red-necked #nightjar feeds, migrates and raises its young... the bird's entire annual cycle follows the moon's rhythm... when the moon is full, the bird can hunt insects for much of the night. When it is dark, it is instead forced to rely on brief hunting opportunities at dusk and dawn."

  5. A family of nightjars on the South Downs heathland in southern England, UK. The elusive nightjar has made a remarkable comeback in the South Downs national park following conservation efforts: it’s thought their numbers have doubled in the past five years.

  7. It seems Schloss Dagstuhl expects birds to be deterred from window collisions by the sight of a #nightjar - surely one of the least threatening medium-sized birds - even if they are really the trapped #souls of unbaptised children, doomed for all eternity to blind #goats ...

  9. N is for...Nice Nightjar! This nightjar is delivering a calming cup of herbal tea to someone who could use it this evening.

Sliding in at the final hour (EST) before 'N' ends. 'O' begins tomorrow!

  13. First up, "Skyglow relieves a crepuscular bird from visual constraints on being active" by Evens et al.: doi.org/10.1016/j.scitotenv.20

In the paper, they show that #nightjar birds behave differently in locations with or without skyglow, and importantly that the relation with cloud cover is opposite between the two locations. (10/17)

  15. No, this isn't a dragon hatchling – it's a great-eared nightjar!

A nocturnal species known for its haunting calls and unusual habit of incubating its eggs on the forest floor, the great-eared nightjar (Lyncornis macrotis) is a sight to behold for those lucky enough to spot one in the wild.

This is a great eared nightjar.
To me, it looks like a dragon bird. Such an odd bird! Love the creature, though I have never met one in person yet.

  18. Having a bit of a break from #Bradford Pride with a pint in the #ExchangeCraftBeerHouse. An excellent selection from #Nightjar brewery, which I'd never come across before.

Now bracing ourselves or a visit to #GrumpyJohn's cider festival...

  20. Weekly Sketch #213 - 28th of July. I drew a very cute and freaky looking bird, the "Great eared nightjar" for this week's sketch. The look of these birds is really unique. #art #drawings #drawing #sketches #sketch #birds #bird #nightjar #greatearednightjar

A new species of nightjar (Caprimulgus) from Timor and Wetar, Lesser Sunda Islands, Wallacea onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/fu

"#Nightjars are nocturnal #birds with highly cryptic plumage, seldom observed by humans despite a near-global distribution. Their highly unobtrusive nature, combined with the similar appearance of different species of nightjar makes them extremely hard to study"

  24. Night hawks asleep on a driftwood roost in Tambopata River, Peruvian Amazon. Tambopata National Park core has only one lodge, Tambopata Research Center. I am so lucky to have stayed there twice, in a ‘room’ open to the jungle. I wish I was there. Perhaps I can write myself back?

  25. Always sad these days to observe an interesting species and not have a chance to photograph it 🙁. I was leaving the CSIRO Black Mountain site here in #Canberra at dusk this evening, and a bird flew close overhead that I would instantly have called as a #nightjar in Europe.

Dark with long, parallel-sided wings and tail and the rubbery flight of a hawking nightjar or nighthawk.

It must have been my first white-throated nightjar, but I'm left with this in #iNaturalist:

  29. #DoodlewashDecember2022 prompt: Nightjar
Did you know the male nightjar has a call with up to 1900 notes a minute? They also make a loud wing-clapping sound when patrolling territory.
