The Voice of Niels Bohr
The other night I watched the 2023 film Oppenheimer on TV. I had seen it before, on a plane flight, and enjoyed it, though I thought it was overlong. Fortunately it was a long flight. Watching it again a couple of days ago reminded me of something that struck me first time, and that was the cameo performance by Kenneth Branagh as Niels Bohr. Niels Bohr was born in Copenhagen, a place I visited many times in the past and can recognize the local accent, though had never heard the speaking voice of Niels Bohr himself. I was a underwhelmed by Branagh’s rendition because he doesn’t sound very Danish to me. I assumed that because it was a relatively small part, Branagh didn’t put much effort into it. He doesn’t look like Niels Bohr, either.

Światło ma dwie tożsamości, których nie da się zobaczyć jednocześnie. Fizycy z MIT przeprowadzili najbardziej precyzyjną w historii wersję słynnego eksperymentu z dwiema szczelinami, używając do tego pojedynczych atomów. Wynik?
To potwierdzenie fundamentalnej zasady mechaniki kwantowej i ostateczny dowód na to, że w słynnym sporze z Nielsem Bohrem, Albert Einstein nie miał racji.
Eksperyment z dwiema szczelinami to klasyka fizyki, znana każdemu licealiście (a przynajmniej powinna być znana). Gdy przepuścimy światło przez dwie szczeliny, na ekranie za nimi nie zobaczymy dwóch jasnych plam (jakbyśmy strzelali piłeczkami), ale naprzemienne jasne i ciemne paski – wzór interferencyjny, dowodzący falowej natury światła.
Magia zaczyna się jednak wtedy, gdy próbujemy podglądać (obserwować), przez którą szczelinę przeleciał foton. Wówczas wzór znika, a światło zachowuje się jak cząsteczka. Natura chroni swoje sekrety: nie pozwala obserwować obu stanów naraz.
Spór gigantów: Einstein kontra Bohr
W 1927 roku Albert Einstein rzucił wyzwanie tej koncepcji. Twierdził, że foton przelatujący przez szczelinę powinien wywrzeć na nią minimalny nacisk – jak ptak muskający liść w locie. Einstein uważał, że mierząc ten „szelest”, można by ustalić drogę cząsteczki, nie niszcząc jednocześnie falowego wzoru interferencyjnego. W skrócie: chciał mieć ciastko i zjeść ciastko. Niels Bohr ripostował, że sama próba pomiaru i tak zniszczy falową naturę zjawiska.
Przez lata przeprowadzano wiele testów, ale dopiero teraz zespół z MIT pod wodzą prof. Wolfganga Ketterle dokonał tego w wersji „idealnej”, sprowadzając eksperyment do kwantowych fundamentów.
Atomy zamiast szczelin
Naukowcy nie użyli kartki papieru z nacięciami. Zamiast tego wykorzystali chmurę 10 tysięcy atomów schłodzonych niemal do zera absolutnego i ułożonych laserami w idealną siatkę. Każdy atom działał jak osobna „szczelina”, rozpraszając pojedyncze fotony.
Kluczowym elementem było sterowanie „rozmyciem” atomów. Im luźniej atom był trzymany przez laser, tym bardziej był „rozmyty” w przestrzeni i tym łatwiej reagował na uderzenie fotonu (rejestrował jego drogę). Zgodnie z przewidywaniami Bohra, im więcej informacji o drodze cząsteczki (czyli im bardziej atom „szeleszczał” jak liść z przykładu Einsteina), tym słabszy stawał się wzór falowy.
Bez sprężyn, bez oszustw
Badacze poszli o krok dalej. Aby obalić teorię, że za wszystko odpowiadają siły trzymające atomy, wyłączyli lasery na ułamek sekundy. Pomiary wykonano na atomach swobodnie spadających w próżni. Wynik był identyczny: mechanika kwantowa działa bezbłędnie.
Eksperyment potwierdził, że nie da się oszukać natury. Obserwacja cząsteczkowa zawsze niszczy obraz falowy. Einstein mylił się, sądząc, że można to obejść sprytnym pomiarem odrzutu.
Publikacja MIT to piękny hołd dla nauki w roku 2025, ogłoszonym przez ONZ Międzynarodowym Rokiem Nauki i Technologii Kwantowych. Jak zauważają autorzy, to „wspaniały zbieg okoliczności”, że historyczny spór udało się ostatecznie rozstrzygnąć dokładnie w stulecie powstania mechaniki kwantowej.
