  1. @syrengelas Hi there, great to see you also here in the #nicuverse. Which is still a rather quiet space but lots of potential IMHO (more than the regular bigtech platforms IMHO) Find some more accounts to follow on the starter pack link below, and do follow @nicupodcast , @actapaed and @ESPR_ESN

  2. Another concerning report, based on national Au/NZ data, showing that adverse neurodevelopmental outcomes seems to increase over time in extremely preterm infants (born 2010-14 vs 2015-19).

We need to do better in the #nicuverse !

  3. Interesting #Cochrane review about minimizing blood sampling in preterm infants. Although there are many links in the chain from taking blood samples and morbidities (and conf by indication etcetc), results are indeed interesting, e.g. that placental sampling for admission tests may reduce e.g. ROP risk.

  4. Another follow up of the ”Sugar Babies study” showing potential risks with oral dextrose gel, the standard of care of in management of neonatal hypoglycemia…
And I keep wondering whether there is a causal relationship or something else, like the fact that infant treated in the original trial were not admitted, or whether there were rebounding hypoglycemia (undiagnosed).
Guess I will need to keep wondering…

  5. Growth and development of preterm infants is much more about nutrition that we usually acknowledge (self-explanatory, but nutrition is a pretty neglected area in the NICU, IMHO).
A good starting point: that papers report standardized growth parameters: weight, length and head circumference at birth, at 28 postnatal days and at 36 weeks PMA, all expressed as Z-scores.

  19. While having some train time, I had some time to summarize some thoughts about the difficult discussion and debate that is emerging in Sweden, about what is in the best interest of infants born at 22 and 23 weeks. It is a longer blog post on the @99nicu web site, but wanted to share the link to it here in the #nicuverse as well. I looking fw to hear your thoughts.

  21. Finally something coming into the #nicuverse on PDA management that brings less confusion on a higher level :) and I think many people will relate to this. The pendulum will swing a little back, which is good IMO.

  26. #MedMastodon and #nicuverse - maybe you followed Dr Bryan Vartabedian’s writing on Tw (AKA Doctor_V) and on the blog 33charts.com.
He is now doing the ”Liminal MD” podcast (+ writing on liminalmd.substack.com) , IMHO today's most intellectually stimulating thoughts about the wider scope of medicine.
For ex, listen to the discussion w John Lantos how ”... AI isn't the beginning of medicine's identity crisis. It's the culmination of one that started two centuries ago.”

  31. Help Select the 2025 EBNEO Impact Article of the Year!

The race has reached its final showdown. After a highly competitive first round involving eight outstanding articles, two landmark RCTs have emerged as the clear frontrunners: Faix et al. (Preterm Hypothermia) and Laughon et al. (PDA Management). Because the margin was incredibly narrow, we are opening one final head-to-head vote to determine the definitive winner for 2025.
