  3. Got myself a working Taco Phone - Nokia N-Gage (NEM-4), released in 2003. Original model feels more ergonomic and easier to use than later Nokia N-Gage QD, but it is required to turn the device off and remove battery to replace game card :colorful_floppies:

    Siekiant konkuruoti su „Nintendo Game Boy Advance“ pristatomas revoliucinis hibridinis įrenginys, sujungiantis mobilųjį telefoną ir nešiojamą žaidimų konsolę. Tai buvo pirmasis telefonas optimizuotas žaidimams su 3D grafika, stereo garsu ir multiplayer per Bluetooth ar internetą (N-Gage Arena).

    Symbian OS 6.1, TFT 2.1 colio ekranas (176x208 pikselių, 4096 spalvos), 104 MHz ARM procesorius, 3.4 MB atmintis (plėčiama MMC kortele), VGA kamera (0.3 MP), GPRS ryšys, Bluetooth 1.1, FM radijas, baterija 850 mAh (4 val. žaidimų, 200 val. budėjimo), 137 g svoris, dydis 134 x 70 x 20 mm.

    Nepaisant pastangų sukurti specialius game-play mygtukus ir pritraukti garsius žaidimų pavadinimus, N-Gage nesugebėjo sujungti abiejų pasaulių. Skambinant telefoną reikėjo laikyti šonu prie ausies, todėl vartotojai jį ironiškai praminė „Taco Phone“.

  14. Как амбиции и маркетинг Nokia уничтожили N-Gage

    В середине января Nokia дала «добро» университету Аалто на публикацию огромного архива ранее конфиденциальных документов. Открытие доступа к таким документам очень важно для понимания того, как Финляндия, в отрыве от остального мира, смогла создать свою философию дизайна для портативных устройств. Помимо весьма запоминающихся дизайнов, компания всегда старалась будто бы совершить прыжок во времени: какой концепт ни посмотри — все напоминают современные устройства. Правда, многие из концептов больше напоминали иллюстрации к какой-то научной фантастике. Но реализовать игровое устройство у них таки получилось в виде смартфона N-Gage. Благодаря обнародованным архивам, мы можем лишний раз убедиться, что маркетологи Nokia смотрели слишком далеко в будущее, игнорируя реалии тех лет. Привело всё это к тому, что N-Gage потерпела крах. Но как зарождалась идея игрового смартфона? Да, на Хабре в последнее время уже вышли материалы про N-Gage, но они больше технические, и не затрагивают архивные материалы, как и не рассказывают про менее успешную платформу N-Gage 2.0. Эта же статья — больше про историю того, как Nokia пыталась позиционировать устройство и платформу.

    I did not have one back in the days, but yesterday successfully flashed the most up-to-date firmware and gave it a go. Controls are not the most convenient, but playing classic Tomb Raider on a hand-held device in 3D is something :ablobcatattention: :nokia:

    For VBSB2, I know at least from a former Nokia employee that the developers constantly missed milestones, but that does not really explain much. It was certainly not cancelled before July 2003, as the Nokia Academy CD from that month still lists it as a launch game.

    This is special not so much for being a pre-release, but because of the completely different artwork used compared to the final retail release.

  25. This early version gives some very nice insights into the game's development. First, I can bust a myth: The #Nokia N-Gage version is not a port of the PlayStation game! Instead, it's a direct port of the #iPaq version from 2001. Pretty much all of the iPaq code is still there (incl. FMV stuff), they just made what was needed to get it working on the N-Gage.

    Even some (unused) assets are still there and the level file is taken unmodified from the iPaq version, too.

    I really need to dig deeper into this. 🙂

  26. Between 2002 and 2004, #Ubisoft had a service in the UK called uPlay Mobile (yes, uPlay - a name they would later recycle). Over this service, you could buy & download mobile games for your phone. There were even "physical" copies you could buy in stores, but these were just empty boxes with a download code.

    That service is long gone and so is access to the games. People sometimes offer the empty game boxes on eBay for crazy prices claiming they are for the Nokia N-Gage - but they are not. They are Java MIDlets, so not even native #S60 apps. They run of course on the N-Gage, too.

    Anyway, before this is getting too long: while doing research on something else, I was able to get in touch with a person who was involved in this. And he had a nice archive of many of the uPlay Mobile games that he backed up back in the day. Not all of the 20+ games, but a good part of it. I'm not sure if these are already preserved yet - I have to look into this.
